Daredevil director Steven S DeKnight takes over Pacific Rim 2 from Guillermo Del Toro
Guillermo Del Toro has revealed that Daredevil director Steven S DeKnight will be directing the sequel to Pacific Rim.
DeKnight, who made his name as the showrunner of hit action series Spartacus: Blood And Sand, will make his feature film debut on the movie. Del Toro confirmed his arrival on Twitter, writing:
Met w DeKnight and we are all so happy with our choice to take Pac Rim 2to where we know it can go!!— Guillermo del Toro (@RealGDT) February 24, 2016
Now Pac Rim is a known property and we can expand big!— Guillermo del Toro (@RealGDT) February 24, 2016
The sequel to Pacific Rim has already been through a number of delays, although Del Toro has always maintained it will get made.
The movie starred Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi and Idris Elba and was set in the future where a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures wages on, in the midst of that a former pilot and a trainee are paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon and try to save humanity.
The movie grossed $411 million at the box office and was a particular hit in China, leading a sequel to be ordered, but an initial release date of August 2017 was cancelled by Universal Pictures. It's not known when the movie, which now has DeKnight at the helm, will hit cinemas.
