Fifty Shades Darker- Five Things We Learned

After Fifty Shades of Grey made an awful lot of dollars (over $500 million of them) at the box office across the globe back in 2015, Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey return with the sequel to E.L James’ worldwide book phenomenon: Fifty Shades Darker.

James Foley takes the directorial reins in the highly anticipated new movie where we see Jamie Dornan’s Christian Grey trying to win back the affection of Dakota Johnson’s Anastasia Steele. This time Ana has her own set of rules for their relationship. Agreeing to give him another chance, the two begin to build trust and find stability until people from Christian’s past who are lurking in the shadows try to jeopardize the couple's hopes for a future together.

It hits DVD shelves on Monday (June 26th) and is available to pre-order on the right-hand side of the page, but we caught an early screening and have rounded up five things we learned...

The new additions add thrill and drama...

L.A Confidential's Kim Basinger and Dark Shadows star Bella Heathcote appear as Christian’s jealous ex’s Elena and Leila, while The Knick's Eric Johnson takes on Ana’s revengful boss Jack Hyde. In their own devious ways they all attempt to break the couple apart and put them in danger, with some stalking them into their future…

It’s a visual spectacle…

There is plenty for the eye to enjoy with beautiful scenery as the pair sail across the water in an epic yacht and attend an extravagant masquerade ball with opulent fireworks display. Everything and everyone is beautiful, especially the leads, who are clearer no stranger to the gym…

The couple’s intimate relationship is a little more normal, but there’s still plenty of action…

Christian is trying his best to have a ‘vanilla’ relationship after almost losing Ana when one of her punishments went awry last time. We do get a brief return to the red ‘play’ room but the bondage aspects are a slightly more PG this time around. However things steam up in the shower, they seem to enjoy washing each a lot, hygiene is important you know...

Jamie’s been working on his gymnastics…

We know that Jason Statham had a past life as an Olympic diver so maybe Jamie Dornan has a secret past career too. In a gym scene, he shows off a very impressive move on the pommel horse that caused resounding applause from the crowd at our screening. All that hard work payed off Jamie.

It’s got another brilliant soundtrack…

Tracks from the first films soundtrack made it all the way to the Oscars and they’ve not disappointed with the new talent. Zayn and Taylor Swift lead the way with their banger ‘I Don’t Want To Live Forever’ with Tove Lo, Halsey, John Legend & Corinne Bailey Rae joining the list to name but a few, it’s the perfect accompaniment to this dark, glossy drama.

Fifty Shades Darker is released on DVD on Monday (June 26th) and is available to pre-order here in hmv's online store.
