Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge new favourite to take over as Doctor Who

Phoebe Waller-Bridge, star of Fleabag and Broadchurch, is the new favourite to play Doctor Who

Waller-Bridge, who is currently filming the Star Wars spin-off about a young Han Solo, is now the favourite with the bookies.

According to Coral, Waller-Bridge is now 10/11 to take the role, with the prospect of a female doctor now odds on at 1/2.

Previous favourite Kris Marshall is now 7/2, with Tilda Swinton at 5/1, Homeland star David Harewood at 6/1, former Game Of Thrones star Richard Madden at 11/1 and both Maxine Peake and Olivia Colman at 12/1.

The new doctor will take over from Peter Capaldi, who announced at the end of January that he would be leaving the role.

Capaldi was the 12th actor to occupy the role after taking over from Matt Smith in 2013 and will complete his spell on the show next Christmas when his final episode is broadcast.

Doctor Who will return for a 10th series on Easter Sunday this year.

You can check out the show's back catalogue here in hmv's online store.
