Former Doctor Who star Matt Smith set for leading role in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts

Former Doctor Who star Matt Smith has reportedly emerged as the frontrunner to star in Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Themthe new spin-off from Harry Potter. 

According to The Sun, Smith has been linked with the leading role of Newt Scamander, the lead in the new movie trilogy, which has been scripted by J.K. Rowling. 

The new spin-off, which is inspired by Rowling's universe-expanding textbook about magical creatures, is not a direct prequel to Harry Potter, but will be set in the same universe, likely in the 1920s. It will be directed by David Yates, who was behind the camera on four of the eight Harry Potter films. 

It seems likely that casting decisions will begin to made in the next few weeks as the first film in the trilogy is due to hit cinemas as soon as November 18th 2016, with two sequels dated for 2018 and 2020 already. 

Smith will next be seen in Lost River, Ryan Gosling's directorial debut, which will be released into cinemas next month.
