hmv.com presents… 50 Films to get you excited for 2015! #2 Sci-Fi & Horror

2014 is almost at an end and it’s been a pretty damn great year for movies, we’ve had Guardians Of The Galaxy, X-Men: Days Of Future Past, 12 Years A Slave, The Wolf Of Wall Street, Edge Of Tomorrow, Nightcrawler, the list goes on and on.

But, the thing is, 2015 is shaping up to be even better and we’re going to prove it to you. Over the next few days we’re going to be previewing 50 films that are hitting the big screen in 2015 and they all look outstanding…

Today, we focus on the best of science fiction and horror…

Ex Machina

What Is It?

The directorial debut of The Beach writer Alex Garland, this is a taut, claustrophobic thriller with only three key cast members.

Any plot details?

Caleb is a lowly programmer at a tech corporation who is invited by Nathan, a reclusive genius and his company’s founder, to spend a week with him.

But, when he arrives, he finds that he will have to participate in a strange experiment in which he must interact with the world's first true artificial intelligence, housed in the body of a beautiful robot girl, a girl who is not all she seems.

Who’s In It?

Oscar Isaac stars as the reclusive Nathan, with Domnhall Gleeson as Caleb, the lowly coder, and Swedish actress Alice Vikander plays Ava, the beautiful A.I.

When Can I See It?

It’s not far away, it’ll hit UK cinemas on January 23rd.

Can I See A Trailer?

Jupiter Ascending

What Is It?

A big $175 million sci-fi epic, directed by Wachowskis, of The Matrix fame.

Any plot details?

It goes a little like this: Jupiter Jones is a cleaner, with little or no ambition to do anything else. Then, one day, she is visited by Caine, a genetically engineered ex-military hunter with very pointy ears who informs her of her real heritage.

As it turns out, Earth is actually controlled by a royal family, a royal family currently without an heir after the death of their Matriarch. Three of her children have staked their claim to control Earth, but it turns out that Jupiter may actually be the true heir, and, as a result, there’s a price on her head…

Who’s In It?

Channing Tatum stars as Caine, with Mila Kunis as the aforementioned Jupiter. Eddie Redmayne, Tuppence Middleton and Douglas Booth star as the wannabe heirs, while Sean Bean and Tim Piggott-Smith also have key roles.

When Can I See It?

February 6th. Hopefully, the film’s already been delayed twice, but this release date seems to be sticking.

Can I See A Trailer?

You can of course, it’s below for you.

Tomorrowland

What Is It?

Directed by Brad Bird, this futuristic fantasy is new from Disney.

Any plot details?

The premise is this: A former boy genius and a curious teenager are banded together and head for Tomorrowland, a dangerous place that exists between space and time.

Who’s In It?

George Clooney and Hugh Laurie are the key men, while newcomer Britt Robertson stars as Casey, who partners up with Clooney’s Frank to head to Tomorrowland.

When Can I See It?

It arrives in cinemas on May 22nd in 2015.

Can I See A Trailer?

You can, it doesn’t give away much, but it does look lovely.

Crimson Peak

What Is It?

The new horror chiller from Guillermo Del Toro, this time set in 19th century England.

Any plot details?

This time out Del Toro takes us to Victorian era Cumbria and a crumbling mansion. Young author Edith Cushing has just married the dashing Sir Thomas Sharpe, a man with a mysterious past, a past that begins to unravel rather quickly.

Who’s In It?

Mia Wasikowska leads the cast as Edith Cushing, with Tom Hiddleston as her new husband Sir Thomas Sharpe. Jessica Chastain, Charlie Hunnam and Burn Gorman will also have key roles.

When Can I See It?

Can I See A Trailer?

Not yet, there’s only one official picture from the film so far, which you can see here.

Insurgent

What Is It?

The second instalment of The Divergent series, one of 2014’s breakout hits.

Any plot details?

War is coming and the Divergents are being hunted. It’s going to get very tasty…

Z For Zachariah

What Is It?

Compliance director Craig Zobel tackles Robert C. O’Brien’s classic 80s sci-fi novel, with a small, but very starry cast.

Who’s In It?

Star Trek mainman Chris Pine, The Wolf Of Wall Street’s Margot Robbie and 12 Years A Slave’s Chiwetel Ejiofor take the leads.

Not as yet.

Pride And Prejudice And Zombies

What Is It?

A twisted take on the classic novel, adapted from Seth Grahame-Smith’s tome of the same name.

Any plot details?

The title sums it up pretty well, thing is, the themes of class, love and status that underpin Austen’s iconic novel do rather get pushed away when an army of zombies turn up…

Who’s In It?

It’s something of an all-star cast, with Downton Abbey’s Lily James, Control star Sam Riley, Game Of Thrones’ Lena Headey, Noah’s Douglas Booth and former Doctor Who Matt Smith just some of the key players.

When Can I See It?

It’s due out later this year, exactly when we don’t know, but filming has been taking place throughout the autumn.

Can I See A Trailer?

Not yet. But soon.

Macbeth

What Is It?

A brand new take on William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy from Snowtown director Justin Kurzel.

Any plot details?

It’s likely to be a pretty faithful take on Shakespeare’s story, with plenty of grit and violence. All the word coming from the set is that this is a very dark take on the story, a story that was already the colour of the blackest coffee.

Who’s In It?

Michael Fassbender stars as Macbeth himself, with Marion Cotillard as Lady Macbeth. There are also key roles for Sean Harris, Elizabeth Debecki and Paddy Considine.

When Can I See It?

Spring 2015, we don’t know exactly when though.

Can I See A Trailer?

Not yet.

Who’s In It?

Daniel Radcliffe will play Igor, with James McAvoy as Victor Frankenstein. Mark Gatiss, Jessica Brown-Findley and Andrew Scott also playing big roles.

When Can I See It?

October 2nd next year is its official release date.

Can I See A Trailer?

Not yet, it’ll probably be spring time before we get to see one.

What Is It?

Who’s In It?

Matt Damon will play Watney, with Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Michael Peña and Kristen Wiig also in the cast.

When Can I See It?

It is due into cinemas on November 25th of next year.
