hmv.com presents… 70 Films to get you excited for 2016!

2015 has been an incredible year for movies, we've had stomping blockbusters like Jurassic World, Furious 7 and Avengers: Age Of Ultron, brilliant dramas like Ex Machina and Sicario, hilarious comedies like Spy and Ted 2 and so much more besides. But there's only a few days left of this year and it's time to move on to next year.


So, in that spirit, over the next seven days we'll be previewing 70 of the movies you can look forward to next year. Here goes...

 

Blockbusters

 

Captain America: Civil War

 

What Is It?

The third solo outing for Chris Evan’s be-shielded superhero and easily his biggest to date.  

 

Any plot details?

After destroying Hydra in his second outing The Winter Soldier this time Steve has an even bigger problem to deal with. We pick up right after the events of Avengers: Age Of Ultron and politicians are demanding the gang become more accountable and a body be created to determine when to call in the Avengers. This leads to the fracturing of the team into two opposing factions, Captain America, who wants to continue without regulation, and Iron Man, who is in favour of the proposals, this leads to one almighty showdown…. 2015 has been an incredible year for movies, we've had stomping blockbusters like Jurassic World, Furious 7 and Avengers: Age Of Ultron, brilliant dramas like Ex Machina and Sicario, hilarious comedies like Spy and Ted 2 and so much more besides. Who’s In It?

Evans returns as Steve Rogers and he’s joined by a full-on all star cast. Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie’s Falcon, Don Cheadle’s War Machine, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye, Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther, Paul Bettany’s Vision, Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch and Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man as well as a returning Emily VanCamp, Frank Grillo and the additions of Daniel Brühl, Martin Freeman and William Hurt.

And, as well as this, the debut of Tom Holland as Spider-Man, that’s a lot of cast...

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

What Is It?

The first Star Wars spin-off. Godzilla director Gareth Edwards puts together a story set in between the events of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope.

 

Any plot details?

Only a few. What we know is this: We’re following a band of rebel fighters who come together to steal the Death Star before it can be used to enforce the Emperor's rule. Sounds awesome.

 

Who’s In It?

Felicity Jones leads the way and is joined by an excellent cast that also includes Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, and Alan Tudyk.

 

When Can I See It?

Next Christmas, with a current planned release date of December 16th.

Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice

 

What Is It?

The introduction of a new Batman, new Wonder Woman, new Alfred, new Lex Luthor and the start of DC’s epic run of comic book blockbusters.

 

Any plot details?

Yes indeed. It goes like this, Batman is enraged about the goings on in Metropolis and decides to take on Superman, fearing the consequences if a god-like superhero is left unchecked. Trouble is while those two are duking it out, a brand new threat arises, a monster that will take the both of them to deal with...

 

Who’s In It?

Henry Cavill returns to play Superman/Clark Kent and he is joined by a whole host of big-name newcomers. First we’ve got a brand new Batman in the shape of a much-bulked up Ben Affleck, then Israeli actress Gal Gadot makes her debut as Wonder Woman, the pair of them must do battle with a Lex Luthor played by Jesse Eisenberg, ably assisted by a new Alfred, played this time by Jeremy Irons. Also along for the ride are Diane Lane, Holly Hunter, Laurence Fishburne and a returning Amy Adams.

March 25th next year. We can’t wait.

X-Men: Apocalypse

 

What Is It?

The next instalment in the X-Men Saga, this time with added Oscar Isaac.

 

Any plot details?

After changing the future in Days Of Future Past, the X-Men are faced with a very different threat in their new adventure. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant, awakes after thousands of years and quickly becomes disillusioned with the world he finds. He recruits a team of powerful mutants and announces plans to cleanse humanity and create a new world order, a plan all the X-Men must band together to stop.

 

Who’s In It?

All the big hitters from Days Of Future Past are back, so Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Evan Peters and Nicholas Hoult return, they’re joined by a host of big name newcomers including Game Of Thrones' Sophie Turner, The Newsroom's Olivia Munn, The Road's Kodi Smit-McPhee and former Eastenders man Ben Hardy.

Isaac has bulked up and takes on the part of Apocalypse himself.

Suicide Squad

 

What Is It?

The Suicide Squad are imprisoned supervillains recruited by a secret government agency to execute dangerous black ops missions. You’ll recognise a lot of these villains, they’ve often been put away by a certain Dark Knight…

 

Any plot details?

There’s not too much to go on just yet, but there are a lot of characters to set up, so this film will have to introduce us to them properly. We’re excited to meet them...

 

Who’s In It?

It’s got a hell of a cast. Will Smith will lead the way as Deadshot, with Jared Leto playing The Joker and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress. It also features The Wolf Of Wall Street's Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jai Courtney as Boomerang, with Viola Davis playing Amanda Waller, the squad's brutal handler.

 

When Can I See It?

Next summer. August 5th to be precise.

Ghostbusters

 

What Is It?

A reboot of the classic 1984 action comedy, this time with a kickass all-female cast.

 

Any plot details?

The reboot is the story of Erin Gilbert and Abby Yates, a pair of unfashionable authors who write positing that ghosts are real. This comes back to haunt Gilbert when she lands a prestigious teaching position and the book resurfaces and she is laughed out of a job. But, when ghosts invade Manhattan it’s she and her team who have to team up save the world.

 

Who’s In It?

Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones star as the Ghostbusters themselves, while Chris Hemsworth, Neil Casey and Andy García are among the supporting cast.

 

When Can I See It?

In the height of next summer, it hits cinemas on July 15th 2016.

Bourne 5

 

What Is It?

A sequel to the Bourne Ultimatum and a return to the franchise for both star Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass.

 

Any plot details?

Not a thing so far. Not even a confirmed title. Jason Bourne never did like giving much away...

 

Who’s In It?

Damon returns to take the role of Jason Bourne, while Julia Stiles is also back as Nicky Parsons. Joining the party are Alicia Vikander, Vincent Cassel, Tommy Lee Jones and Riz Ahmed.

 

When Can I See It?

It’s another summer release, this time at the end of July, July 29th to be precise.

Independence Day: Resurgence

 

What Is It?

20 years after the original movie the aliens are back for a second assault on Earth, humanity must defend itself, but it’ll have to do so without Will Smith.

 

Any plot details?

Having fought off an epic alien invasion back in 1996, earth that has used the technology left behind after the invasion to build an immense defense program, but, when the aliens return once again, that it won't be enough to save the planet and the fight must taken to them. There will be lots and lots of battles in the process.

 

Who’s In It?

The sequel stars The Hunger Games' Liam Hemsworth, It Follows' Maika Monroe, rising star Jessie Usher, with Jeff Goldblum, Vivica A Fox, Bill Pullman and Judd Hirsch all returning to the reprise their roles. Usher's role is to play the son of Captain Steven Hillier, the role played by Will Smith in the original blockbuster, who is not returning for the sequel.

 

When Can I See It?

June 24th next summer, just 10 days before actual Independence Day.

What Is It?

Marvel’s newest hero, a sorcerer supreme, played by Sherlock himself, Benedict Cumberbatch.

When this movie starts our hero will be Stephen Strange, the world's top neurosurgeon, but after he’s injured in a car accident that ruins his career, he sets out on a journey of healing, where he encounters the Ancient One, who gives him the most incredible powers.

Aside from Mr. Cumberbatch there are also roles for Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Michael Stuhlbarg, Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton.

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them

 

What Is It?

The first of a trilogy of Harry Potter spin-offs, scripted by J.K. Rowling herself.

 

Any plot details?

The movie centres around Newt Scamander, a key figure in the underground movement of witches and wizards in early 20th century New York, he sets off for the Magical Congress of the United States of America, for a meeting with an important official, a meeting that will change everything in the wizarding world...

 

Who’s In It?

Eddie Redmayne leads the way this time as Newt Scamander, with a supporting gang that also includes  Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Dan Fogler, Samantha Morton, Ezra Miller, Colin Farrell, Faith Wood-Blagrove, Jenn Murray, Jon Voight and Ron Perlman.

London Has Fallen

 

What Is It?

The sequel to hit action smash-em-up Olympus Has Fallen, last time the White House was under attack, this time it’s London.

 

Any plot details?

After surviving a terrorist attack on the White House in the original movie, this time Gerard Butler's Secret Service Agent Mike Banning and Aaron Eckhart's President Benjamin Asher are in London for the funeral of the British Prime Minister, who has died under mysterious circumstances. While in London Asher suddenly finds himself caught up in a deadly plot to kill the world's most powerful leaders and once again turns to Banning to save him.

 

Who’s In It?

Aaron Eckhart and Gerard Butler return as President Asher and Banning respectively, while Morgan Freeman is also back. They are joined by Charlotte Riley, who will play a kickass MI6 agent.

 

When Can I See It?

The Purge 3

 

What Is It?

The third instalment of the action horror franchise, set on the single night where all crime is legal.

 

Any plot details?

Not much at this stage, director James DeMonaco has denied rumours that this will be an origin story about how The Purge began, but he’s not given away much more than that.

 

Who’s In It?

Frank Grillo, who led the way in sequel The Purge: Anarchy, returns to star once again, this time he’s joined by Once Upon A Time’s Elizabeth Mitchell and Homicide: Life on the Street’s Kyle Secor.

After surviving the wrath of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Khan the crew are in trouble again, but this time for very different reasons. This time the crew find themselves destitute after being attacked by a powerful unstoppable wave of unknown aliens, who destroy the Enterprise and leave them stranded on a new planet where they find themselves in conflict with a new ruthless enemy.

Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, John Cho and Anton Yelchin are all back, while Idris Elba will play the as yet unnamed villain.

Cruise is back, but Rosamund Pike is not, instead this time it’s How I Met Your Mother star Cobie Smulders and Straight Outta Compton’s Aldis Hodge in the key supporting roles.

This time the turtles are not only up against their old foe Shredder, but a new crackpot scientist with his eyes on causing the end of the world. Fortunately they’ve got some help from Casey Jones, a vigilante with some serious power.

What Is It?

A reboot/reimagining of the 1995 classic.

None. We assume it’s quite close to the original Jumanji where young Alan Parrish plays a old board game that can bring the world’s deadliest beasts to your door, but it may well have a new plot and sheen.

 

Who’s In It?

No one knows yet, but Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Jonathan Liebesman is in the director’s chair.

 

When Can I See It?

It’s currently due in cinemas on Christmas Day next year.

Point Break

 

What Is It?

A remake of the iconic 1991 movie.

 

Any plot details?

This is the story of FBI agent Johnny Utah, a rookie who is given the task of investigating a string of robberies being committed by a gang of extreme athletes.

In a bid to catch them, Johnny goes undercover to infiltrate the gang and ends up developing a friendship with the group, in particular their charismatic leader Bodhi.



Who’s In It?

Luke Bracey takes the role of Johnny Utah, a role played in the 1991 by Keanu Reeves, while Edgar Ramirez is Bodhi, who was previously portrayed by Patrick Swayze. Delroy Lindo and Bojesse Christopher also have key roles in the new movie.

What Is It?

The smuttiest and most violent X-Men spin-off you could possibly imagine, with Ryan Reynolds starring.

Deadpool is Wade Wilson, a former special forces operative who has just been diagnosed with terminal cancer, in desperation he agrees to be subjected to an experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, horribly disfigured skin and an unstable mind. Now both blessed with incredible abilities and cursed with irreversible damage to his body, he sets out to find the man who did this to him. There will be violence along the way, lots of it.

Reynolds leads the way and is joined by Homeland’s Morena Baccarin, the new Transporter Ed Skrein as well as T. J. Miller, Gina Carano, Brianna Hildebrand, Andre Tricoteux, and Leslie Uggams

You’ve actually not got long to wait, it’s due out on February 12th, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

The Huntsman: Winter’s War

 

What Is It?

A prequel to the hit fantasy epic Snow White And The Huntsman...

 

Any plot details?

We’ve gone back, a long time before Snow White entered the picture, evil sisters Ravenna and Freya threatened to conquer the land and cover it in darkness. The only two who can stop them? That would be The Huntsman and his lover Sara.

 

Who’s In It?

Both Kristen Stewart and director Rupert Sanders have departed this franchise, so in come Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain, they join a returning Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth.

April 22nd next year, that’s when it hits cinemas.

Pride And Prejudice And Zombies

 

What Is It?

Seth Grahame-Smith’s blood spattered novel took Jane Austen’s classic and added a lot of members of the undead, an Elizabeth Bennett who is a master of weapons and a whole lot of action, now it’s heading for the big screen.

 

Any plot details?

It’s pretty much what you’d imagine. We’re in the 19th century and love is in the air, but a mysterious plague has fallen on the land, a plague that brings the dead back to life. It means before Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy can think about their future together, they must team up and stop the zombie apocalypse.

 

Who’s In It?

It’s got a brilliant cast, with Downton Abbey’s Lily James, Control star Sam Riley, Game Of Thrones’ Lena Headey, Noah’s Douglas Booth and former Doctor Who Matt Smith the biggest names.



When Can I See It?

February 12th again, it’ll make a lovely double feature with Deadpool.

Definitely. Be warned, there’s a lot of flying limbs.



 

Underworld: Next Generation

 

What Is It?

The fifth film in the Underworld series, a movie that will bring the next generation of fighters in the ongoing war behind lycans and vampires.

 

Any plot details?

Not too much, but it’ll pick right up after 2012’s Underworld: Awakening and will almost certainly see Selene and her ally David trying to find their place in amongst a new crop of vampires, some of whom may not share their wish for a peaceful existence.

 

Who’s In It?

Kate Beckinsale returns to the fold and reprises her role as Selene, the ultimate death dealer. She is joined by Divergent star Theo James, Sherlock’s Lara Pulver, Casino Royale’s Tobias Menzies and, of course, Charles Dance.



When Can I See It?

Not for a little while, it’s due in cinemas on October 21st.

Allegiant: Part One

 

What Is It?

The first part of the final instalment in the Divergent franchise.

 

Any plot details?

After the devastating events of Insurgent, Tris and Tobias decide to brave life outside the fence and are taken into protective custody by a mysterious agency known as the Bureau of Genetic Welfare. But, after a few days of comfort, they begin to think they’ve gone out of the frying pan and into the fire.

 

Who’s In It?

Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Kate Winslet and Naomi Watts are all back again, the only big name addition is Jeff Bridges.

 

When Can I See It?

March. It’ll be out on March 16th, the final part of the story will follow in 2017.

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi

 

What Is It?

Michael Bay’s new action thriller, after spending his last year working on the very fantastical Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Transformers, this is a real-life re-telling and a brutal one.

 

Any plot details?

This is the story of an attack on US State Department Special Mission Compound in Benghazi on September 11th 2012, with a focus on six members of a security team that defended the embassy.

 

Who’s In It?

John Krasinki, who you’ll know best from his role in the American version of The Office, leads the way, he’s joined by a low-key cast, the other two actors you’ll know best are 24’s James Badge Dale and Black Sails’ Toby Stephens.

 

When Can I See It?

You’ve only got a few days to wait, it’ll be in cinemas on January 15th.

Gods Of Egypt

 

What Is It?

A big sword and sandals blockbuster, set in an age where gods and men lived side by side.



Any plot details?

This is a proper epic. Set, the god of darkness, overthrows his rival Horus and seizes the throne in the Egyptian empire. To save his love and his country, Bek, a mortal hero, partners with Horus to reclaim the throne.

 

Who’s In It?

The big names are Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who you’ll know best from his role as Jaime Lannister in Game Of Thrones, Brenton Thwaites, the future star of Pirates Of The Caribbean, 300’s Gerard Butler, future Marvel star Chadwick Boseman and veteran Geoffrey Rush

April 8th, a couple of months after the US release.

Gambit

 

What Is It?

Our second X-Men spin-off, this one starring Channing Tatum as Gambit, a mutant with the ability to manipulate energy in extraordinary ways and who’s fond of a game of cards.

 

Any plot details?

We don’t know too much at this stage, but Tatum has promised it will be high-octane and a lot of fun.

 

Who’s In It?

Aside from Tatum the only other confirmed star is Spectre’s Lea Seydoux, she will play Bella Donna Boudreaux.

 

When Can I See It?

If we’re honest, this one could be delayed until next year, but it’s due at the end of 2016.

Nope. Filming isn’t underway yet.

 

Deepwater Horizon

 

What Is It?

Friday Night Lights creator Peter Berg directs this thriller about Deepwater Horizon, an offshore drilling rig which exploded during April 2010 and created the worst oil spill in U.S. history.

 

Any plot details?

See above, we’ll get the story of the explosion and the men and women who were caught up in it.

 

Who’s In It?

Frequent Berg collaborator Mark Wahlberg leads the way, he’s joined by Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Dylan O'Brien and Kate Hudson.

Autumn time, it’s due on September 30th.

Goosebumps

 

What Is It?

A spectacular adaptation of R.L. Stine’s classic teen horror novels.

 

Any plot details?

Rather than an individual adaptation of one of his novels, Jack Black stars as Stine himself, he writes the Goosebumps stories and keeps all the ghosts and monsters in the series locked up in books in his home. When Zach, a new kid who just moved next door to him and daughter Hannah, unintentionally releases the ghouls and the monsters from the storybooks, the three of them are forced to team up in order to put the monsters back where they came from.

 

Who’s In It?

Black plays Stine, while Amy Ryan, Avery Jones, Odeya Rush and Dylan Minnette also star.

 

When Can I See It?

What is it?

The upcoming comedy from Joel and Ethan Coen, the brothers behind films like Fargo and No Country for Old Men

 

Any plot details?

In a slightly 'meta' storyline, the Coen Brothers' latest offering is, ostensibly at least, a movie about making a movie. Set in 1950s Hollywood, film studio Capitol Pictures are about to embark on their latest feature, a film about the Roman empire entitled Hail, Caesar!, for which they have recruited as their leading man the (fictional) Hollywood star Baird Whitlock. However, when a hungover Whitlock is kidnapped by a mysterious gang calling themselves 'The Future' and the studio receives a ransom note demanding $100,000 for his return, industry 'fixer' Eddie Mannix is recruited to raise the ransom money and track down the gang in order to get Whitlock back.

 

Who's in it?

The film's impressive cast is led by Josh Brolin, who stars as fixer Mannix, and George Clooney in the role of the kidnapped star Whitlock. Elsewhere there are also roles for Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum, Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill and Dolph Lundgren, among many others.

Zoolander 2

 

What is it?

The long-awaited sequel to Ben Stiller's 2001 comedy featuring “ridiculously good-looking” male model, Derek Zoolander

 

Any plot details?

Having been some time since Derek and his buddy Hansel were “so hot right now”, the two models are washed up and becoming a laughing stock, out of touch with the today's modelling scene. But when a mysterious killer begins murdering all of the world's most beautiful people, the pair are recruited by Interpol to infiltrate the fashion world and try to find out who is responsible.

 

Who's in it?

Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson reprise their roles as Derek Zoolander and Hansel, along with Christine Taylor in the role of Matilda, while Will Ferrell also returns as the evil mastermind Mugatu. New additions include Kristen Wiig, Penelope Cruz, Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Munn and Billy Zane, while the list of beautiful people finding themselves on the hit list include Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Kim Kardashian West and Demi Lovato.

What is it?

Riotous comedy featuring a badly-behaved OAP (Robert De Niro) and his long-suffering grandson Zac Efron

With his wife having just passed away and his grandson's wedding just around the corner, pensioner Dick Kelly finds a new lease of life and drags his grandson Jason to Daytona Beach for a Spring Break holiday filled with sex, drugs and lots of partying, but Jason's wife-to-be is far from happy about their little getaway.

Alongside De Niro and Efron is Julianne Hough, who appears as Jason's fiancee Meredith, and a supporting cast that includes Aubrey Plaza, Jason Mantzoukas and Henry Zebrowski.

Melissa McCarthy is very much the star of the show here, but the supporting cast includes Kristen Bell, Peter Dinklage, Kathy Bates and Kristen Schaal.

What is it?

Comedy from We're the Millers director Rawson Marshal Thuber, starring Kevin Hart and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson

 

Any plot details?

A mild mannered accountant reunites with an old school friend through Facebook, but when he discovers that his old buddy is now working as an agent for the CIA, he soon finds himself dragged into a world of espionage and way out of his depth

 

Who's in it?

Hart and Johnson are the main stars, alongside a cast that includes Aaron Paul, Amy Ryan, Megan Park and Ryan Hansen. There is also rumoured to be an appearance from R&B singer Bobby Brown.

 

When can I see it?

The film is due to arrive in the UK on July 1st.

The Brothers Grimsby

 

What is it?

Screwball comedy set in 1980s Grimsby, written by – and starring – Sascha Baron-Cohen.

 

Any plot details?

Two brothers are separated at a young age when they are adopted by different parents. One of them, Sebastian, becomes the world's most deadly secret agent. The other, Nobby, becomes a football hooligan. When the pair are reunited and Sebastian is wrongfully accused of murder, they team up for a new assignment to save the world from a sinister plot.

 

Who's in it?

Sascha Baron-Cohen stars as the dim-witted Nobby, alongside Mark Strong as his much more sophisticated secret agent brother. Rebel Wilson appears as Nobby's wife and mother of his umpteen children, while there are also appearances from Isla Fisher, Ian McShane, Penelope Cruz, Gabourey Sidibe and David Harewood.

Bridget Jones' Baby

 

What is it?

The third film based on the character from Helen Fielding's novels

 

Any plot details?

A detailed storyline has yet to emerge at the time of writing, but given the title and various photos taken on the film set, the story will definitely involve a pregnancy and see the film's titular protagonist becoming a mother for the first time. The rest is just speculation at this stage, with some suggesting that Grey's Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey, who is confirmed as having a role in the film, will play a character that forms part of a love triangle with Jones and her partner, Mark Darcy.

 

Who's in it?

Renee Zelweger returns as Bridget Jones, as does Colin Firth in the role of Darcy. Other returning cast members include Sally Phillips, who once again appears as Bridget's friend Shazza, and Celia Imrie, who returns as Una, as well as Jim Broadbent and Gemma Jones reprising the roles as Bridget's parents. There are also some new additions besides Dempsey, including some sort of role for Ed Sheeran, although it's not clear what exactly he'll be up to.

This one's a little while away yet, currently slated for a September release next year.

Eddie the Eagle

 

What is it?

Comedic biopic of Britain's most famous ski-jumper Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards, directed by Dexter Fletcher

 

Any plot details?

Given that it's a biopic, the plot is fairly self-explanatory, but it charts Eddie's life from childhood to the realisation of his ambitions to compete at the Winter Olympics at Calgary in 1988. Along the way he has help from a former champion ski-jumper from Lake Placid, who assists him in overcoming numerous obstacles on his path to the tournament, including an absence of funding, poor eyesight and resistance from a snobbish ski-jumping establishment who accuse him of making a mockery of their sport.

 

Who's in it?

Taron Egerton stars as the titular hero, with Hugh Jackman playing the role of his (fictional) trainer Bronson Peary. There are also roles for Christopher Walken, Vikings star Edvin Endre and Blackadder's Tim McInnerny,

 

When can I see it?

It's due in cinemas in the UK on February 26th

Me Before You

 

What is it?

Heartbreaking tale of love and loss based on the novel of the same name by Jojo Moyes

 

Any plot details?

Although it's unclear at the time of writing just how closely the film's narrative sticks to that of the book, the story involves a young woman called Lou whose life changes dramatically when she loses her job at a cafe and end up working as a care assistant to a man named Will, who has been rendered quadriplegic after a car accident. Will is intent on taking his own life in Switzerland through the assisted suicide organisation Dignitas, but Lou is tasked by his family with trying to persuade him to change his mind.

 

Who's in it?

Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin lead the cast in the roles of Lou and Will, with Charles Dance and Janet McTeer playing her parents Steven and Camilla, while Doctor Who's Jenna Coleman also stars as Lou's younger sister Katrina

 

When can I see it?

The film is due to arrive in UK cinemas on June 3rd

David Brent: Life on the Road

 

What is it?

The return of Ricky Gervais' comic creation David Brent, who leaves behind the offices of Wernham-Hogg to concentrate on his career as a touring rock musician.

 

Any plot details?

Details are a little basic as yet, but broadly speaking the idea is that the film crew who documented Brent's working life at Wernham-Hogg catch up wiith him several years later, observing his attempts to carve out a career in the music business. Basically it's a road movie following him up and down the country.

 

Who's in it?

Gervais will obviously return in the role of David Brent, as well as comedian Kevin Bishop and Ben Smith – AKA Doc Brown – who fans of Gervais will remember as the co-creator of Brent's 2013 Comic Relief single, 'Equality Street'.

 

When can I see it?

The film is set to open in UK cinemas on August 19th

2015 has been an incredible year for movies, we've had stomping blockbusters like Jurassic World, Furious 7 and Avengers: Age Of Ultron, brilliant dramas like Ex Machina and Sicario, hilarious comedies like Spy and Ted 2 and so much more besides. But there's only a few days left of this year and it's time to move on to next year.

Assassin’s Creed

The long-awaited adaptation of the massively successful video game about an ancient order of assassins.

Callum Lynch, an ordinary man in the present day, discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society named the Assassins. With the help of new technology he is able to amass incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organisation.

Michael Fassbender, who has been attached to this project for a long time, leads the way as Lynch. As well as Fassbender there are star turns from Marion Cotillard, Michael K. Williams, Ariane Labed, Jeremy Irons, and Brendan Gleeson

Matthew McConaughey is the main attraction, but he’s joined by an excellent cast, a cast that includes Beyond The Lights’ Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Scandal’s Keri Russell.

A big, big sci-fi epic with the planet’s biggest actor and actress, Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence.

But, when there’s a malfunction in one of its sleep chambers, a single passenger is awoken 60 years early. Faced with the prospect of growing old and dying alone, he eventually decides to wake up a second passenger.

Pratt and Lawrence are the headliners, but they’re also joined by Laurence Fishburne and Michael Sheen. It’s a small cast...

We’ve got a stellar voice cast that includes Bill Murray, Idirs Elba, Ben Kingsley Scarlett Johansson and Lupita Nyong'o, but the only actor who you’ll see in the film is young newcomer Neel Seethi, who is playing Mowgli.

A big, swinging adaptation of the iconic story, directed by Harry Potter mastermind David Yates.

This is a new take on Tarzan. In this story we begin with Tarzan not in the jungles of Africa, but living as  John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, with his wife, Jane in London. However he is then invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a murderous plot, a plot that threatens to unleash his primitive origins

The film stars True Blood's Alexander Skarsgård in the titular role with The Wolf Of Wall Street's Margot Robbie playing Jane. They are joined by a cast that also includes Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, John Hurt and Djimon Hounsou.

What is it?

A brutal drama from director John Hillcoat with a stellar cast and Kate Winslet as you’ve never seen her before.

The movie follows a gang of criminals and corrupt cops as they plan the murder of a police officer in order to pull off a huge heist on the other side of town, only for the officer to survive and set out for revenge.

 

Who’s in it?

The cast is incredible. The main players are  Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie, Aaron Paul, Norman Reedus, Woody Harrelson, Clifton Collins, Jr., Michael K. Williams, Teresa Palmer and Gal Gadot, while Kate Winslet glams up as a ruthless Russian mob boss.

The Girl On The Train

 

What is it?

A much-anticipated adaptation of Paula Hawkins’ best-selling thriller.



Any plot details?

Hawkins’ book has been transplanted from London to New York, but keeps the main plot the same in that we follow Rachel Watson, a troubled alcoholic whose husband left her for his mistress and who is struggling to keep her life together. Things then get a whole lot worse when she witnesses a murder and starts to realise that she may have been involved in the crime.

 

Who’s in it?

Emily Blunt stars as Watson and she is in company that includes Rebecca Ferguson, Haley Bennett, Justin Theroux, Luke Evans, and Édgar Ramírez.

 

When can I see it?

Later in the year, it’s due in cinemas on October 7th.

The Big Short

 

What is it?

A starry financial drama, written and directed by Anchorman’s Adam McKay.

It’s a thriller that tells the story of the build-up to the housing and credit bubble throughout the 2000s that eventually led to the financial crisis of 2007-2010, all seen through the eyes of a group of financiers who see the whole thing coming.

 

Who’s in it?

Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, and Brad Pitt lead the way with Marissa Tomei, Rafe Spall and Melissa Leo in minor roles.

What is it?

A film about McDonalds. Literally.

 

Any plot details?

This is the story of Ray Kroc, an Illinois salesman who met brothers Mac and Dick McDonald and somehow maneuvered himself into a position to take control of their company and turn it into the behemoth it is today.

 

Who’s in it?

Michael Keaton plays the slippery Kroc while Parks and Recreation’s Nick Offerman and Ted 2’s John Carroll Lynch play the brothers McDonald.

 

When can I see it?

The end of the year, it’ll be out in November.

High-Rise

 

What is it?

Ben Wheatley’s adapts J.G. Ballard’s 1975 novel with an all-star cast.

 

Any plot details?

It’s London in 1975 and Robert Laing is a young doctor who takes a flat in an isolated community, cut off from the rest of society in their luxury tower block, a block full of strange characters and simmering tensions.

 

Who’s in it?

It’s got quite the cast, Tom Hiddleston leads the way, but he’s got  Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, Luke Evans and Elisabeth Moss for company.

 

When can I see it?

It’ll be in cinemas on March 18th.

The movie begins on the morning of December 21st in 1970 when Presley turned  up to the White House and requested that he be granted an urgent meeting with President Richard Nixon, to swear him in as an undercover agent in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs.

 

Who’s in it?

Kevin Spacey plays Nixon and Man Of Steel villain Michael Shannon plays Elvis, there are also supporting roles for Alex Pettyfer, Colin Hanks, Evan Peters, Johnny Knoxville, Sky Ferreira and Tracy Letts.

Ellen DeGeneres provides the voice of Dory, while the rest of the voice cast includes Idriss Elba, Dominic West, Diane Keaton and Willem Defoe, among many, many others.

Kung Fu Panda 3

 

What is it?

The third instalment in the Kung Fu Panda series of animated films

 

Any plot details?

Po is finally reunited with his biological father, who takes him to his homeland; a village full of pandas deep in the mountains. However, Po's peace and happiness is short-lived; an old foe of master Oogway's named Kai returns to wreak havoc on the Valley of Peace, destroying it and much of the Jade Palace before setting his sights on finding Po and dishing out the same treatment to the panda village. The usual cast of familiar voices all return, including Jack Black providing the voice of Po alongside Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu and David Cross. New additions to the cast include Bryan Cranston as Po's father Li, as well as J.K. Simmons as the new villain Kai.

Alice Through the Looking Glass

 

What is it?

The sequel to Tim Burton's 2010 film Alice in Wonderland, also based on the writings of Lewis Carroll

 

Any plot details?

The film is loosely based on Caroll's sequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, although in the film Alice has been back in the real world for several years rather than months, following in the footsteps of her sailor father and travelling the oceans of the world. When she returns to London and ends up back in Wonderland via a portal in a magic mirror, she encounters a new and sinister inhabitant who goes by the name of Time, personified as half-clock, half-human. Alice must seek his help to assist the Mad Hatter, who has not been himself recently...

 

Who's in it?

The main cast members from the original film are all present incorrect, including Mia Wasikowska as Alice, Johnny Depp as the Hatter and Helena Bonham-Carter as the oddly-proportioned Red Queen, as well as Anne Hathaway returning in the role of her white counterpart. The biggest new addition to the cast is Sascha Baron-Cohen in the role of Time, but other new cast members include Rhys Ifans and Toby Jones.

 

When can I see it?

It''ll be arriving in UK cinemas on May 27th.

Kubo and the Two Strings

 

What is it?

Stop-motion animated fantasy adventure directed by Travis Knight, son of Nike founder Phil Knight.

 

Any plot details?

It's set in Japan and features a young boy called Kudo, the son of a legendary samurai who spends his days in his village caring for his mother, that is until a spirit from the past returnss to wreak havoc on their lives an Kubo must don his late father's magical suit of armour to do battle with gods and monsters alike.

 

Who's in it?

Matthew McConaughey, Rooney Mara, Charlize Theron, Ralph Fiennes and George Takei are among the cast, with the voice of protagonist Kubo being provided by Game of Thrones star Art Parkinson.

 

When can I see it?

It'll be arriving in UK cinemas on September 9th next year.

Zootopia

 

What is it?

Another animated adventure from Disney, this time revolving around a city populated entirely by mammals named Zootopia

 

Any plot details?

It goes something like this: a rabbit named Judy Hopps embarks on a new career in the police department and is charged with investigating the disappearance of an otter, but to solve the case she needs help and makes an unlikely partnership with a fox named Nick Wilde, who also happens to be a con artist who has been framed for a crime he didn't commit. The pair then find themselves stitched up in a conspiracy and must pool their talents to prove themselves innocent and catch the conspirers behind the plot.

 

Who's in it?

Ginnifer Goodwin provides the voice of Judy, while Jason Bateman does the same for Nick. Alongside them is a voice cast that includes Idriss Elba, J.K. Simmons and Shakira.

 

When can I see it?

It's going to be arriving in UK cinemas on March 25th.

The Secret Life of Pets

 

What is it?

Animated comedy examining what happens when the owners of pets living in a Manhattan apartment building while they're at work.

 

Any plot details?

The story centres around a menagerie of animals living in the same building in New York, whose blissful existence comes under threat when a villainous bunny rabbit named Snowball begins to amass an army of strays and abandoned pets, with the intention of mounting a revenge-fuelled attack on the animals lucky enough to be living the good life.

 

Who's in it?

The film's voice cast includes Kevin Hart, Ellie Kemper, Louis C.K., Dana Carvey, Lake Bell and Steve Coogan.

 

When can I see it?

It's due to arrive in UK cinemas on June 24th

Sing

 

What is it?

Animated musical comedy featuring a singing Koala named Buster.

 

Any plot details?

Just an outline at the moment, but basically Buster recruits a buddy to raise funds for his theatre. Beyond that the details are scarce, but Garth Jennings (Son of Rambow, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy) is the man in the director's chair.

 

Who's in it?

So far the list of confirmed cast members is an impressive one that includes Scarlett Johansson, Taron Egerton, Seth MacFarlane, Reese Witherspoon, John C. Reilly, Peter Serafinowicz and Jennifer Saunders, with the voice of Buster being provided by Matthew McConaughey.

 

When can I see it?

This one's lined up for next Christmas, with a release date of December 22nd.

Not yet, might be a while until we see one given it's nearly a full year until the movie hits cinema screens.



The Angry Birds Movie

 

What is it?

Feature-length animation featuring the characters from the insanely popular mobile game. Yes, really.

 

Any plot details?

It goes like this: seven of the Angry Birds are living a blissful life until they get wind of the arrival of The Pigs, who have a nefarious plot in store for the birds, so they team up to investigate what their porky counterparts are up to.

 

Who's in it?

Josh Gad, Jason Sudeikis, Bill Hader, Peter Dinklage, Maya Rudolph and Danny McBride have all signed on the dotted line for this one.

 

When can I see it?

It's due out on May 13th, a full week before the Americans get a look at it.

Ice Age: Collision Course

 

What is it?

The fifth instalment in the Ice Age series and the sequel to Continental Drift.

 

Any plot details?

This time the action has moved to space, where Scrat's adventure threaten's to set of a chain of events that could mean disaster for Manny and the rest of the crew back on planet Earth. Scrat also finds an exotic place lead by a spiritual leader named Shangri-Llama.

 

Who's in it?

Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Dennis Leary, Nick Offerman, Chris Wedge, Simon Pegg and Jennifer Lopez are all among the star-studded cast

 

When can I see it?

Oddly enough for a film with 'Ice Age' in the title, it's due in UK cinemas at the height of summer, on July 29th to be exact.

Trolls

 

What is it?

3D-animated comedy from Dreamworks based on the famous toy dolls with the brightly-coloured hair

 

Any plot details?

Details are very sketchy at this stage, with only an outline suggesting an adventure or quest of some sort, but beyond that there's nothing concrete.

 

Who's in it?

Only two cast members have been confirmed so far, namely Pitch Perfect's Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake.

 

When can I see it?

It's currently pencilled in for release on October 21st, so we're a while away yet.
