hmv.com presents… 70 Films to get you excited for 2016! #1 Blockbusters

2015 has been an incredible year for movies, we've had stomping blockbusters like Jurassic World, Furious 7 and Avengers: Age Of Ultron, brilliant dramas like Ex Machina and Sicario, hilarious comedies like Spy and Ted 2 and so much more besides. But there's only a few days left of this year and it's time to move on to next year. 

So, in that spirit, over the next seven days we'll be previewing 70 of the movies you can look forward to next year. We begin today with the blockbusters...

 

Captain America: Civil War

 

What Is It?

The third solo outing for Chris Evan’s be-shielded superhero and easily his biggest to date.  

 

Any plot details?

After destroying Hydra in his second outing The Winter Soldier this time Steve has an even bigger problem to deal with. We pick up right after the events of Avengers: Age Of Ultron and politicians are demanding the gang become more accountable and a body be created to determine when to call in the Avengers. This leads to the fracturing of the team into two opposing factions, Captain America, who wants to continue without regulation, and Iron Man, who is in favour of the proposals, this leads to one almighty showdown…. 

 

Who’s In It?

Evans returns as Steve Rogers and he’s joined by a full-on all star cast. Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie’s Falcon, Don Cheadle’s War Machine, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye, Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther, Paul Bettany’s Vision, Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch and Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man as well as a returning Emily VanCamp, Frank Grillo and the additions of Daniel Brühl, Martin Freeman and William Hurt.

And, as well as this, the debut of Tom Holland as Spider-Man, that’s a lot of cast...

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

 

What Is It?

The first Star Wars spin-off. Godzilla director Gareth Edwards puts together a story set in between the events of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope.

 

Any plot details?

Only a few. What we know is this: We’re following a band of rebel fighters who come together to steal the Death Star before it can be used to enforce the Emperor's rule. Sounds awesome.

 

Who’s In It?

Felicity Jones leads the way and is joined by an excellent cast that also includes Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, and Alan Tudyk.

 

When Can I See It?

Next Christmas, with a current planned release date of December 16th.

Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice

 

What Is It?

The introduction of a new Batman, new Wonder Woman, new Alfred, new Lex Luthor and the start of DC’s epic run of comic book blockbusters.

 

Any plot details?

Yes indeed. It goes like this, Batman is enraged about the goings on in Metropolis and decides to take on Superman, fearing the consequences if a god-like superhero is left unchecked. Trouble is while those two are duking it out, a brand new threat arises, a monster that will take the both of them to deal with...

 

Who’s In It?

Henry Cavill returns to play Superman/Clark Kent and he is joined by a whole host of big-name newcomers. First we’ve got a brand new Batman in the shape of a much-bulked up Ben Affleck, then Israeli actress Gal Gadot makes her debut as Wonder Woman, the pair of them must do battle with a Lex Luthor played by Jesse Eisenberg, ably assisted by a new Alfred, played this time by Jeremy Irons. Also along for the ride are Diane Lane, Holly Hunter, Laurence Fishburne and a returning Amy Adams.

 

When Can I See It?

March 25th next year. We can’t wait.

X-Men: Apocalypse

 

What Is It?

The next instalment in the X-Men Saga, this time with added Oscar Isaac.

 

Any plot details?

After changing the future in Days Of Future Past, the X-Men are faced with a very different threat in their new adventure. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant, awakes after thousands of years and quickly becomes disillusioned with the world he finds. He recruits a team of powerful mutants and announces plans to cleanse humanity and create a new world order, a plan all the X-Men must band together to stop.

 

Who’s In It?

All the big hitters from Days Of Future Past are back, so Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Evan Peters and Nicholas Hoult return, they’re joined by a host of big name newcomers including Game Of Thrones' Sophie Turner, The Newsroom's Olivia Munn, The Road's Kodi Smit-McPhee and former Eastenders man Ben Hardy.

Isaac has bulked up and takes on the part of Apocalypse himself.

 

When Can I See It?

Not soon enough! May 27th next year is the date it hits cinemas.

Suicide Squad

 

What Is It?

The Suicide Squad are imprisoned supervillains recruited by a secret government agency to execute dangerous black ops missions. You’ll recognise a lot of these villains, they’ve often been put away by a certain Dark Knight…

 

Any plot details?

There’s not too much to go on just yet, but there are a lot of characters to set up, so this film will have to introduce us to them properly. We’re excited to meet them...

 

Who’s In It?

It’s got a hell of a cast. Will Smith will lead the way as Deadshot, with Jared Leto playing The Joker and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress. It also features The Wolf Of Wall Street's Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jai Courtney as Boomerang, with Viola Davis playing Amanda Waller, the squad's brutal handler.

 

When Can I See It?

Next summer. August 5th to be precise.

Ghostbusters

 

What Is It?

A reboot of the classic 1984 action comedy, this time with a kickass all-female cast.

 

Any plot details?

The reboot is the story of Erin Gilbert and Abby Yates, a pair of unfashionable authors who write positing that ghosts are real. This comes back to haunt Gilbert when she lands a prestigious teaching position and the book resurfaces and she is laughed out of a job. But, when ghosts invade Manhattan it’s she and her team who have to team up save the world.

 

Who’s In It?

Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones star as the Ghostbusters themselves, while Chris Hemsworth, Neil Casey and Andy García are among the supporting cast.

 

When Can I See It?

In the height of next summer, it hits cinemas on July 15th 2016.

Bourne 5

 

What Is It?

A sequel to the Bourne Ultimatum and a return to the franchise for both star Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass.

 

Any plot details?

Not a thing so far. Not even a confirmed title. Jason Bourne never did like giving much away...

 

Who’s In It?

Damon returns to take the role of Jason Bourne, while Julia Stiles is also back as Nicky Parsons. Joining the party are Alicia Vikander, Vincent Cassel, Tommy Lee Jones and Riz Ahmed.

 

When Can I See It?

It’s another summer release, this time at the end of July, July 29th to be precise.

Independence Day: Resurgence

 

What Is It?

20 years after the original movie the aliens are back for a second assault on Earth, humanity must defend itself, but it’ll have to do so without Will Smith.

 

Any plot details?

Having fought off an epic alien invasion back in 1996, earth that has used the technology left behind after the invasion to build an immense defense program, but, when the aliens return once again, that it won't be enough to save the planet and the fight must taken to them. There will be lots and lots of battles in the process.

 

Who’s In It?

The sequel stars The Hunger Games' Liam Hemsworth, It Follows' Maika Monroe, rising star Jessie Usher, with Jeff Goldblum, Vivica A Fox, Bill Pullman and Judd Hirsch all returning to the reprise their roles. Usher's role is to play the son of Captain Steven Hillier, the role played by Will Smith in the original blockbuster, who is not returning for the sequel.

 

When Can I See It?

June 24th next summer, just 10 days before actual Independence Day.

Doctor Strange

 

What Is It?

Marvel’s newest hero, a sorcerer supreme, played by Sherlock himself, Benedict Cumberbatch.

 

Any plot details?

When this movie starts our hero will be Stephen Strange, the world's top neurosurgeon, but after he’s injured in a car accident that ruins his career, he sets out on a journey of healing, where he encounters the Ancient One, who gives him the most incredible powers.

 

Who’s In It?

Aside from Mr. Cumberbatch there are also roles for Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Michael Stuhlbarg, Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton.

 

When Can I See It?

Late next year, November 4th.

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them

 

What Is It?

The first of a trilogy of Harry Potter spin-offs, scripted by J.K. Rowling herself.

 

Any plot details?

The movie centres around Newt Scamander, a key figure in the underground movement of witches and wizards in early 20th century New York, he sets off for the Magical Congress of the United States of America, for a meeting with an important official, a meeting that will change everything in the wizarding world...

 

Who’s In It?

Eddie Redmayne leads the way this time as Newt Scamander, with a supporting gang that also includes  Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Dan Fogler, Samantha Morton, Ezra Miller, Colin Farrell, Faith Wood-Blagrove, Jenn Murray, Jon Voight and Ron Perlman.

 

When Can I See It?

November next year, the 18th to be exact.
