hmv.com presents… 70 Films to get you excited for 2016! #4 Comedies

2015 has been an incredible year for movies, we've had stomping blockbusters like Jurassic World, Furious 7 and Avengers: Age Of Ultron, brilliant dramas like Ex Machina and Sicario, hilarious comedies like Spy and Ted 2 and so much more besides. But there's only a few days left of this year and it's time to move on to next year.

So, in that spirit, over the next seven days we'll be previewing 70 of the movies you can look forward to next year. Today it's time for comedies...

Hail, Caesar!

What is it?

The upcoming comedy from Joel and Ethan Coen, the brothers behind films like Fargo and No Country for Old Men

Any plot details?

In a slightly 'meta' storyline, the Coen Brothers' latest offering is, ostensibly at least, a movie about making a movie. Set in 1950s Hollywood, film studio Capitol Pictures are about to embark on their latest feature, a film about the Roman empire entitled Hail, Caesar!, for which they have recruited as their leading man the (fictional) Hollywood star Baird Whitlock. However, when a hungover Whitlock is kidnapped by a mysterious gang calling themselves 'The Future' and the studio receives a ransom note demanding $100,000 for his return, industry 'fixer' Eddie Mannix is recruited to raise the ransom money and track down the gang in order to get Whitlock back.

Who's in it?

The film's impressive cast is led by Josh Brolin, who stars as fixer Mannix, and George Clooney in the role of the kidnapped star Whitlock. Elsewhere there are also roles for Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum, Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill and Dolph Lundgren, among many others.

Bridget Jones' Baby

What is it?

The third film based on the character from Helen Fielding's novels

Any plot details?

A detailed storyline has yet to emerge at the time of writing, but given the title and various photos taken on the film set, the story will definitely involve a pregnancy and see the film's titular protagonist becoming a mother for the first time. The rest is just speculation at this stage, with some suggesting that Grey's Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey, who is confirmed as having a role in the film, will play a character that forms part of a love triangle with Jones and her partner, Mark Darcy.

Who's in it?

Renee Zelweger returns as Bridget Jones, as does Colin Firth in the role of Darcy. Other returning cast members include Sally Phillips, who once again appears as Bridget's friend Shazza, and Celia Imrie, who returns as Una, as well as Jim Broadbent and Gemma Jones reprising the roles as Bridget's parents. There are also some new additions besides Dempsey, including some sort of role for Ed Sheeran, although it's not clear what exactly he'll be up to.

When can I see it?

This one's a little while away yet, currently slated for a September release next year.

Can I see a trailer?

There's no trailer yet, unfortunately.

Eddie the Eagle

What is it?

Comedic biopic of Britain's most famous ski-jumper Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards, directed by Dexter Fletcher

Any plot details?

Given that it's a biopic, the plot is fairly self-explanatory, but it charts Eddie's life from childhood to the realisation of his ambitions to compete at the Winter Olympics at Calgary in 1988. Along the way he has help from a former champion ski-jumper from Lake Placid, who assists him in overcoming numerous obstacles on his path to the tournament, including an absence of funding, poor eyesight and resistance from a snobbish ski-jumping establishment who accuse him of making a mockery of their sport.

Who's in it?

Taron Egerton stars as the titular hero, with Hugh Jackman playing the role of his (fictional) trainer Bronson Peary. There are also roles for Christopher Walken, Vikings star Edvin Endre and Blackadder's Tim McInnerny,

When can I see it?

It's due in cinemas in the UK on February 26th

Can I see a trailer?

Yes, yes you can...

Me Before You

What is it?

Heartbreaking tale of love and loss based on the novel of the same name by Jojo Moyes

Any plot details?

Although it's unclear at the time of writing just how closely the film's narrative sticks to that of the book, the story involves a young woman called Lou whose life changes dramatically when she loses her job at a cafe and end up working as a care assistant to a man named Will, who has been rendered quadriplegic after a car accident. Will is intent on taking his own life in Switzerland through the assisted suicide organisation Dignitas, but Lou is tasked by his family with trying to persuade him to change his mind.

Who's in it?

Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin lead the cast in the roles of Lou and Will, with Charles Dance and Janet McTeer playing her parents Steven and Camilla, while Doctor Who's Jenna Coleman also stars as Lou's younger sister Katrina

When can I see it?

The film is due to arrive in UK cinemas on June 3rd

Can I see a trailer?

Sadly there's no official trailer for this one as yet.

David Brent: Life on the Road

What is it?

The return of Ricky Gervais' comic creation David Brent, who leaves behind the offices of Wernham-Hogg to concentrate on his career as a touring rock musician.

Any plot details?

Details are a little basic as yet, but broadly speaking the idea is that the film crew who documented Brent's working life at Wernham-Hogg catch up wiith him several years later, observing his attempts to carve out a career in the music business. Basically it's a road movie following him up and down the country.

Who's in it?

Gervais will obviously return in the role of David Brent, as well as comedian Kevin Bishop and Ben Smith – AKA Doc Brown – who fans of Gervais will remember as the co-creator of Brent's 2013 Comic Relief single, 'Equality Street'.

When can I see it?

The film is set to open in UK cinemas on August 19th

Can I see a trailer?

There's no trailer for this one yet, unfortunately, but you can bet it will be the kind of awkward, watch-through-your-fingers kind of thing we've come to expect from David Brent.
