hmv.com presents… 70 Films to get you excited for 2016! #5 Epics

2015 has been an incredible year for movies, we've had stomping blockbusters like Jurassic World, Furious 7 and Avengers: Age Of Ultron, brilliant dramas like Ex Machina and Sicario, hilarious comedies like Spy and Ted 2 and so much more besides. But there's only a few days left of this year and it's time to move on to next year.

So, in that spirit, over the next seven days we'll be previewing 70 of the movies you can look forward to next year. Today it's time for the epics..

 

Assassin’s Creed

 

What Is It?

The long-awaited adaptation of the massively successful video game about an ancient order of assassins.

 

Any plot details?

Callum Lynch, an ordinary man in the present day, discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society named the Assassins. With the help of new technology he is able to amass incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organisation.

 

Who’s In It?

Michael Fassbender, who has been attached to this project for a long time, leads the way as Lynch. As well as Fassbender there are star turns from Marion Cotillard, Michael K. Williams, Ariane Labed, Jeremy Irons, and Brendan Gleeson

 

When Can I See It?

The very end of next year, it’s due in cinemas on December 21st.

The Free State Of Jones

 

What Is It?

A big US Civil War drama with Matthew McConaughey in the starring role.

 

Any plot details?

This is the story of Newton Knight, a poor farmer who led a full armed rebellion against the Confederacy. Opposed to both slavery and secession, he launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to itself secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones...

 

Who’s In It?

Matthew McConaughey is the main attraction, but he’s joined by an excellent cast, a cast that includes Beyond The Lights’ Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Scandal’s Keri Russell.

 

When Can I See It?

It’s due in cinemas in late spring, May 13th.

 

Can I See A Trailer?

Not yet, but given the movie is due out in May it must be coming in soon.



Passengers

 

What Is It?

A big, big sci-fi epic with the planet’s biggest actor and actress, Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence.

 

Any plot details?

We’re onboard a spaceship travelling to a distant colony planet and transporting thousands of people. But, when there’s a malfunction in one of its sleep chambers, a single passenger is awoken 60 years early. Faced with the prospect of growing old and dying alone, he eventually decides to wake up a second passenger.

 

Who’s In It?

Pratt and Lawrence are the headliners, but they’re also joined by Laurence Fishburne and Michael Sheen. It’s a small cast...

 

When Can I See It?

At the very end of the year, it’s due out on December 21st in 2016.

Warcraft: The Beginning

 

What Is It?

A long-awaited and much delayed adaptation of the hugely successful online role playing fantasy game.

 

Any plot details?

Set in the fictional world of Azeroth and this movie tells the story of the initial encounters between the humans who live there and the orcs, both humans and orcs face destruction, can they find a way to stop it?

 

Who’s In It?

An ensemble cast that includes Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper, Toby Kebbell, Ben Schnetzer, Robert Kazinsky, Daniel Wu, Ruth Negga, Anna Galvin and Clancy Brown.

 

When Can I See It?

June 10th next summer.

Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children

 

What Is It?

Tim Burton directs this adaptation of Ransom Riggs' acclaimed novel. 

 

Any plot details?

16-year old Jacob Portman discovers a series of clues, clues that lead him to a mysterious island, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine's School for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores the abandoned bedrooms and hallways, he discovers that its former occupants were far more than peculiar; they possessed incredible powers. Not only that, but also that they may still be alive...

Eva Green leads the way as Miss Peregrine herself, she's joined by a cast that also includes Asa Butterfield, Ella Purnell, Chris O'Dowd, Allison Janney, Terence Stamp, Kim Dickens, Rupert Everett, Judi Dench and Samuel L. Jackson.

Ben Hur

 

What Is It?

A new take on the colossal biblical epic, though this one might be a bit shorter than the 1959 version...

 

Any plot details?

Judah Ben-Hur is a nobleman who is sentenced to a lifetime of slavery after he is accused of an assassination attempt by his boyhood friend Messala. After surviving years of hardship, he returns to seek revenge...

 

Who’s In It?

Boardwalk Empire’s Jack Huston takes the lead role, he’s joined by  Morgan Freeman, Fantastic Four's Toby Kebbell, How I Met Your Mother's Nazanin Boniadi and Rodrigo Santoro, who you'll know from his turn as Xerxes in 300.

 

When Can I See It?

Another summer release, this one is due out on August 12th.

The Jungle Book

 

What Is It?

Jon Favreau puts his own spin on Rudyard Kipling’s timeless adventure.

 

Any plot details?

Mowgli is an orphan who winds up in the jungle and is raised by wolves,  but is forced to leave his home when his life threatened by the fearsome tiger Shere Khan. From there he goes on the adventure of a lifetime...

 

Who’s In It?

We’ve got a stellar voice cast that includes Bill Murray, Idirs Elba, Ben Kingsley Scarlett Johansson and Lupita Nyong'o, but the only actor who you’ll see in the film is young newcomer Neel Seethi, who is playing Mowgli.

 

When Can I See It?

April 15th next year.

The Magnificent Seven

 

What Is It?

A new version of the iconic Western from Southpaw director Antoine Fuqua.

 

Any plot details?

There’s nothing much about at this stage, but in the original an oppressed Mexican village assembled a team of seven gunfighters to defend them. We imagine there’ll be a few tweaks, but the plot will be much the same...

 

Who’s In It?

The cast is incredible and includes Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, Lee Byung-hun, Luke Grimes, Wagner Moura, Haley Bennett, Matt Bomer, and Peter Sarsgaard.

 

When Can I See It?

It’s due in cinemas in the autumn with a current release date of September 23rd.

Tarzan

 

What Is It?

A big, swinging adaptation of the iconic story, directed by Harry Potter mastermind David Yates.

 

Any plot details?

This is a new take on Tarzan. In this story we begin with Tarzan not in the jungles of Africa, but living as  John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, with his wife, Jane in London. However he is then invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a murderous plot, a plot that threatens to unleash his primitive origins

 

Who’s In It?

The film stars True Blood's Alexander Skarsgård in the titular role with The Wolf Of Wall Street's Margot Robbie playing Jane. They are joined by a cast that also includes Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, John Hurt and Djimon Hounsou.

 

When Can I See It?

July 8th next year.

The BFG

 

What Is It?

Steven Spielberg’s new adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved book.

 

Any plot details?

Dahl’s magical and quirky story tells of an orphan named Sophie and her unlikely friendship with the big, friendly giant as they set out together to capture the evil, man-eating giants who have been invading the human world.

 

Who’s In It?

Mark Rylance steps into the giant shoes as the BFG himself and he’s joined by Rebecca Hall, Bill Hader, Jemaine Clement and newcomer Ruby Barnhill.

 

When Can I See It?

July 22nd.
