hmv.com presents… 70 Films to get you excited for 2016! #6 Dramas

2015 has been an incredible year for movies, we've had stomping blockbusters like Jurassic World, Furious 7 and Avengers: Age Of Ultron, brilliant dramas like Ex Machina and Sicario, hilarious comedies like Spy and Ted 2 and so much more besides. But there's only a few days left of this year and it's time to move on to next year. 

So, in that spirit, over the next seven days we'll be previewing 70 of the movies you can look forward to next year. Today it's time for the dramas...

 

Triple 9

 

What is it?

A brutal drama from director John Hillcoat with a stellar cast and Kate Winslet as you’ve never seen her before.

 

Any plot details?

The movie follows a gang of criminals and corrupt cops as they plan the murder of a police officer in order to pull off a huge heist on the other side of town, only for the officer to survive and set out for revenge.

 

Who’s in it?

The cast is incredible. The main players are  Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie, Aaron Paul, Norman Reedus, Woody Harrelson, Clifton Collins, Jr., Michael K. Williams, Teresa Palmer and Gal Gadot, while Kate Winslet glams up as a ruthless Russian mob boss.

 

When can I see it?

You’ve not got long actually, it’ll be out on February 19th next year.

Yeah, but be warned, it’s hardcore…

 

 

Snowden

 

What is it?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays the notorious Edward Snowden in this new biopic, which is directed by Oliver Stone.

 

Any plot details?

This is the story of how Snowden went from an ordinary CIA employee to the man who leaked thousands of classified documents to the press.

 

Who’s in it?

Gordon-Levitt is the main attraction, but he’s joined by Shailene Woodley, Scott Eastwood, Melissa Leo, Timothy Olyphant, Zachary Quinto, Nicolas Cage and Tom Wilkinson

 

When can I see it?

May 13th next year.

The Girl On The Train

 

What is it?

A much-anticipated adaptation of Paula Hawkins’ best-selling thriller.



Any plot details?

Hawkins’ book has been transplanted from London to New York, but keeps the main plot the same in that we follow Rachel Watson, a troubled alcoholic whose husband left her for his mistress and who is struggling to keep her life together. Things then get a whole lot worse when she witnesses a murder and starts to realise that she may have been involved in the crime.

 

Who’s in it?

Emily Blunt stars as Watson and she is in company that includes Rebecca Ferguson, Haley Bennett, Justin Theroux, Luke Evans, and Édgar Ramírez.

 

When can I see it?

Later in the year, it’s due in cinemas on October 7th.

 

Can see a trailer?

Not yet, filming hasn’t long gotten underway.



The Big Short

 

What is it?

A starry financial drama, written and directed by Anchorman’s Adam McKay.

 

Any plot details?

It’s a thriller that tells the story of the build-up to the housing and credit bubble throughout the 2000s that eventually led to the financial crisis of 2007-2010, all seen through the eyes of a group of financiers who see the whole thing coming.

 

Who’s in it?

Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, and Brad Pitt lead the way with Marissa Tomei, Rafe Spall and Melissa Leo in minor roles.

 

When can I see it?

It’s out now in the US, but doesn’t hit UK screens until January 22nd.

The Founder

 

What is it?

A film about McDonalds. Literally.

 

Any plot details?

This is the story of Ray Kroc, an Illinois salesman who met brothers Mac and Dick McDonald and somehow maneuvered himself into a position to take control of their company and turn it into the behemoth it is today.

 

Who’s in it?

Michael Keaton plays the slippery Kroc while Parks and Recreation’s Nick Offerman and Ted 2’s John Carroll Lynch play the brothers McDonald.

 

When can I see it?

The end of the year, it’ll be out in November.

Not yet, but it’s coming.



High-Rise

 

What is it?

Ben Wheatley’s adapts J.G. Ballard’s 1975 novel with an all-star cast.

 

Any plot details?

It’s London in 1975 and Robert Laing is a young doctor who takes a flat in an isolated community, cut off from the rest of society in their luxury tower block, a block full of strange characters and simmering tensions.

 

Who’s in it?

It’s got quite the cast, Tom Hiddleston leads the way, but he’s got  Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, Luke Evans and Elisabeth Moss for company.

 

When can I see it?

It’ll be in cinemas on March 18th.

Elvis & Nixon

 

What is it?

The story of the strange day in 1970 when Elvis Presley showed up at the White House and demanded to see President Richard Nixon..

 

Any plot details?

The movie begins on the morning of December 21st in 1970 when Presley turned  up to the White House and requested that he be granted an urgent meeting with President Richard Nixon, to swear him in as an undercover agent in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs.

 

Who’s in it?

Kevin Spacey plays Nixon and Man Of Steel villain Michael Shannon plays Elvis, there are also supporting roles for Alex Pettyfer, Colin Hanks, Evan Peters, Johnny Knoxville, Sky Ferreira and Tracy Letts.

 

When can I see it?

It’s due out on April 29th.

La La Land

 

What is it?

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone reunite, this time for a musical...

 

Any plot details?

A musical comedy about the relationship between a talented jazz pianist and a young actress.

 

Who’s in it?

As well as Stone and Gosling you’ve got J. K. Simmons, Finn Wittrock, John Legend, Rosemarie DeWitt and Meagen Fay.

 

When can I see it?

Summer time. July 15th to be exact.

The Witch

 

What is it?

The year’s scariest film, it looks absolutely terrifying.

 

Any plot details?

A puritan family live on the edge of a vast woodland in 17th century New England, but when their youngest child disappears they begin to suspect witchcraft and centre in on their eldest daughter...

 

Who’s in it?

The only actor of any note really is Ralph Ineson, who you’ll know best as Finchy from The Office.

 

When can I see it?

It’s due in cinemas on March 11th.

The Accountant

 

What is it?

It sounds like a credit crunch drama, but it’s actually a full-on action thriller.

 

Any plot details?

This is the story of a forensic accountant un-cooks the books for illicit clients, an accountant whose life is about to change dramatically...



Who’s in it?

Ben Affleck and Anna Kendrick star, supported by J.K. Simmons, Jon Bernthal and Cynthia Addai-Robinson.

 

When can I see it?

October 7th next year.
