10 Things You Didn’t Know About… The Divergent Series

Allegiant, the third and penultimate instalment in the Divergent series, hits DVD shelves on Monday (July 11th). The movie is the third in Veronica Roth’s bestselling series of novels and is set in a future where society is divided into five distinct factions based on personality traits.

Unfortunately for Beatrice 'Tris' Prior, when she undergoes a test to determine which faction she belongs to, she finds out she meets the criteria for more than one and is therefore Divergent - a rare occurrence which puts her and others like her in danger, especially as she soon discovers there’s a plot to rid the world of Divergents all together.

Starring Shailene Woodley as Tris, the film also features a cast that includes Theo James, Jeff Daniels, Octavia Spencer,Ray Stevenson, Zoë Kravitz, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Maggie Q, Bill Skarsgård, and Naomi Watts.

A fourth movie, which is titled The Divergent Series: Ascendant, is due out next year, but for now, enjoy 10 things you didn’t know about The Divergent Series...

The Hunger Games doubled its budget…

When Divergent was initially green lit by producers Lionsgate it was allocated a budget of $40 million, but after the studio’s huge success with The Hunger Games, that was doubled to $80 million and ambitions were widened significantly.

Divergent had a strange codename..

For the filming in public places on Divergent producers listed the production under the codename Cat Bird. Why? No one knows...

Shailene Woodley was almost Katniss Everdeen…

Lots of actresses auditioned for the role of Katniss, including Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin, Emma Roberts, Saoirse Ronan, Chloë Grace Moretz, Emily Browning and Kaya Scodelario, but one of the early favourites was Shailene Woodley. Sadly for her she lost out to Jennifer Lawrence, but, just a few months later, she won the role of Tris...

Theo James saw off some serious competition to get the role of Four…

Woodley was the producer’s choice from the get go, but The Inbetweeners Movie star had some more stiff competition for his role. Before he was approached Jeremy Irvine had declined the role, but even once James was in the picture he was one of a field that also included Lucas Till, Jack Reynor, Alex Pettyfer, Brenton Thwaites, Alexander Ludwig and Luke Bracey. Eventually though they settled on James.

Miles Teller was reluctant to sign on for the movie and needed some unique persuasion…

The Whiplash star, who was also unsuccessful in auditions for Four, was reluctant to take the role of Peter, but was convinced by his co-star Woodley. Apparently, she convinced him to agree by saying he would get to punch her in the face on-screen.

Kate Winslet’s pregnancy meant she needed to take on some extra admin...

Winslet was only on set for a month during the making of Divergent, but it was when she was heavily pregnant. So for all the shots above her waist you’ll find her carrying folders, files and iPads to cover the bump.

All the key cast got in serious shape…

Before production got underway the key cast spent two months in a boot camp to get themselves in shape. Serious commitment!

Insurgent was Kate Winslet’s first ever sequel…

When she signed on for the second movie it marked the first time in over 20 years as a working actress that she’d agreed to a sequel.

Insurgent might have been in 3D, but the others were not…

After experimenting with the format for the series’ second movie, it was ditched for Allegiant and will not be returning for Ascendant.

Ascendant has been delayed by another sci-fi behemoth…

The final movie in the series was due to hit cinemas on March 24th in 2017, but Lionsgate have instead given that slot to the much-anticipated Power Rangers reboot. Instead Ascendant will be in cinemas on June 9th next year.
