10 Things You Need To Know About… Supergirl

Joining Arrow, The Flash, Legends Of Tomorrow and Gotham in DC’s ever-expanding TV remit, Supergirl’s triumphant second season is now out on DVD shelves.

Supergirl, or Kara Zor-El as she's really known and Kara Danvers to her friends, is the biological cousin of Superman and one of the last surviving Kryptonians.

To celebrate the show’s release on DVD, we’ve gathered together 10 things you need to know about this new series...

This isn’t the first time Supergirl has been on screen…

The character actually first appeared on the small screen back in 1973 and she’s been back numerous times since, but Benoist is quickly making the role her own.

Melissa Benoist is an excellent choice to lead the show…

She’s feisty and very charming, she holds the show together superbly.

The producers really put her through the wringer to get the role…

Despite the fact that the Glee star was the first actress to be considered for the role and the first to audition, she turned out to just be the first one in a thousand to try out! It was three months before Benoist found out she’d got the part...

But she almost lost the part to a former Hollyoaks star…

Of those thousand two names, in particular, stood out, Claire Holt, one of the stars of The Vampire Diaries and Gemma Atkinson, who you might know best from her role on Hollyoaks. Ultimately though they both lost out to Benoist.

There’s an excellent supporting cast…

The ensemble is excellent, James Jordan, who starred alongside Anna Kendrick in The Last Five Years, David Harwood, Homeland’s David Estes and Calista Flockhart, who was most famous as the titular star of Ally McBeal, are the pick of the bunch, but it’s a strong ensemble.

Plenty of red caped veterans are in the cast…

Dean Cain, who wore the red cape in the wildly successful TV series The New Adventures of Superman, plays Jeremiah Danvers, Kara’s foster father, while Helen Slater, who starred as Supergirl in the 1984 movie, plays her mother Eliza. What lovely symmetry.

There have been some excellent villains in the first season…

Kara was put through her paces again and again in season one, with spiky Livewire, who can hurl and manipulate electricity, being our personal favourite.

It’s spectacular…

The show’s budget must be lavish, they don’t hold back on effects or stunts, with Kara taking to flight constantly and even battling her many enemies in the air.

There’s a second season on the way…

It’s confirmed and it’ll be on your screens later this year! There’s even a trailer, which you can watch below:

And it’s going to feature Wonder Woman…

Not Gal Gadot, not yet anyway, Lynda Carter, who had the role in the iconic TV series that ran from 1975 to 1979, is on board to play the President Of The United States in the show’s second season.

Supergirl is out now on DVD and Blu-Ray and is available to order here from hmv’s online store.
