"We honestly thought no-one would see the first film, so we kind of went a little extreme..." Chad Stahelski opens up about making John Wick: Chapter 2
A few years ago, when Keanu Reeves came to Chad Stahelski with the script for an action film based around a hitman forced out of retirement over a stolen car and a dead puppy, neither of them could have imagined that the resulting film, John Wick, would become one of the surprise box office hits of 2014.
It was to be expected, then, that the studios would be keen to have a sequel and this weekend John Wick: Chapter 2 blasts its way onto UK cinema screens. Keanu Reeves returns as the titular dog-loving hitman, who is still having problems retiring from his trade, while other returning cast members include Ian McShane, John Leguizamo and Lance Reddick. New additions this time around include Laurence Fishburne, Ruby Rose, Common and Riccardo Scamarcio.
With the film arriving on DVD shelves on Monday (June 11th), we sat down with director Chad Stahelski to talk about the surprise success of the first film, Keanu's work ethic and the challenges of filming in a room full of mirrors.
