Jupiter Ascending - Five Things We Learned

It’s got a budget of over $175 million, it’s been delayed twice and it’s been the talk of the press for months on end, it’s new sci-fi behemoth Jupiter Ascending.

The film stars Mila Kunis as Jupiter Jones, a cleaner on earth who suddenly discovers that she is in fact intergalactic royalty when she is rescued by Channing Tatum's genetically engineered hunter-turned-bodyguard. Turns out she could actually be in line to inherit control of the Earth, something three members of the Abraxas royal family, played by Eddie Redmayne, Tuppence Middleton and Douglas Booth, all want for themselves.

It’s huge, it’s spectacular and like everything Lana and Andy Wachowski make their names on, it’s a real cinematic event. We caught an early screening and here are five things we learned…

It looks incredible…

No one makes films look like the Wachowskis do, it’s grand, it’s rich, the costumes are spectacular and the visuals are like nothing you’ve seen before. As they proved with The Matrix and Speed Racer, no one builds worlds like they do.

The action set pieces are stunning…

From the tumbling Star Wars esque space fights to the spectacular high-wire action set pieces, there’s enough high-octane action here to satisfy any stunt junkie’s tastes.

Bees don’t lie…

For every spectacular bit of effects work, there is one almighty clunker in the script. Throughout their career, the Wachowskis have been famed for their big ideas and bold vision, not for their writing abilities. There are some nice exchanges, but some knuckle-biting ones too, including a particularly bad one where Sean Bean’s Stinger attempts to explain to Jupiter why bees never tell lies…

Channing Tatum is on badass form…

A few of the other performers are questionable, particularly Sean Bean, who might be playing a man who’s part bee, but still talks like he’s sat in a pub in the middle of Sheffield, but Channing, rocking wolf ears and some rocket boots, looks every inch the action hero.

It’s all a little overwhelming, but there are some interesting themes in there somewhere…

There's a lot to take in here. But, between dinosaur like creatures in suits, humans being harvested for a youth serum, men who are half bee and half wolf and Eddie Redmayne talking as if he's been on a steady diet of 150 cigarettes a day, there’s a classic dystopian story about the viciousness of capitalism and the strangeness of royal families in there. You can’t always find it, but it’s there…

Jupiter Ascending is released into cinemas on Friday (February 6th)
