La La Land - Five Reasons You’ll Love It

Tipped to win many an Oscar, having already won seven Golden Globes and been nominated for 11 BAFTAs, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone star in this musical, which has been written and directed by Whiplash's Damien Chazelle and also features John Legend, J.K. Simmons, Rosemarie DeWitt, Finn Wittrock, Callie Hernandez, Sonoya Mizuno, Jessica Rothe, Tom Everett Scott and Josh Pence in the cast.

La La Land tells the story of Gosling's Sebastian and Stone's Mia. Sebastian is a dedicated jazz musician, scraping by playing cocktail piano gigs in dingy bars, while Mia is an aspiring actress who serves lattes to movie stars in between auditions. The pair meet and fall in love, but, as they find success, things get very complicated.

It hits DVD shelves on Monday (May 15th) and is available to pre-order on DVD, Blu-Ray and limited edition Blu-Ray Steelbook on the right-hand side of the page. We caught an early screening and have rounded up five reasons you’ll love it…

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are both on tip top form…

The two leads are perfectly cast and will sweep you along with their performances and their voices. They’re the favourites for the Oscars for a damn good reason...

So are the supporting cast…

This is mostly a two-hander between the two leads, but there are plenty of other performances worth celebrating too. J.K.Simmons’ sarky restaurant owner is a delight, as is Rosemarie DeWitt’s no-nonsense casting director and, best of all, John Legend, who plays Keith, a ruthlessly ambitious singer with a great voice. Well, we probably knew he could play the part…

It looks incredible…

Stone and Gosling are the stars, but there’s an even bigger character in this movie and that’s Los Angeles itself. Chazelle takes the constant traffic jams, the soulless bars and the endless auditions and gives them a sprinkle of glitz and stardust, every frame of this film looks incredible.

The songs are brilliant…

From the melancholy ‘City Of Stars’ to the groovy ‘Start A Fire’ and the all-action ‘Another Day Of Sun’, the songs are all well-written, interestingly arranged and supremely catchy.

Damien Chazelle has outdone himself once again…

Chazelle’s debut was the thrilling Whiplash, a movie which somehow took the rather dry subject of jazz music school and transformed it into a breathless thriller. Now he’s taken on something even more ambitious, a glitzy musical, a concept that has sunk directors far more well-heeled than him, and absolutely pulled it off. The direction is flawless and the pacing is quick, making the film feel light on its feet and never overly indulgent, while he captures Los Angeles in a strange, but rather wonderful light. We can’t wait to see what he does next...
