Lady Macbeth - Five Reasons You’ll Love It

It wowed critics and punters alike, it cost a measly £500,000, it’s one of the year’s best movies and now it arrives on DVD shelves, it’s Lady Macbeth.

Starring newcomers Florence Pugh and Cosmo Jarvis and a first-time feature film director in William Oldroyd, the movie is a harrowing adaptation of Nikolai Leskov’s novel, itself a new take on William Shakespeare’s classic villain.

Pugh plays Katherine, a teenage girl who is sold into marriage with a cruel and uncaring older man named Alexander. Alexander is constantly away and leaves Katherine to grow bored, especially as she is forced to maintain a strict schedule and prevented from leaving the house.

Growing restless, Katherine strikes up a relationship with Sebastian, one of the servants in the house, a relationship that quickly develops into a passionate affair. But, as the affair goes on, the struggle to keep it secret leads the pair to deadly risks…

The movie is out now on DVD and available here to purchase in hmv’s online store, but back when it was in cinemas we caught an early screening and have rounded up five reasons why you’ll love it...

Florence Pugh is absolutely electric…

Pugh was a scene stealer alongside Maisie Williams in The Falling, but here she is centre stage and totally captivating. Cold and calculating, charming and menacing, you get the sense she’s destined for very big things in the future…

Cosmo Jarvis is an excellent find…

Jarvis plays Sebastian, the rough and ready stable hand, he’s acerbic, raw and very watchable indeed. A singer by trade, this is Jarvis’s film debut and it’s a hell of a good start.

It’s beautifully shot…

Oldroyd’s camera is often static, giving the film a coldness and an intimacy that’s almost uncomfortable. He balances this off beautifully with lots of lush shots of the Northumbrian countryside, but always with a keen eye on the actors. There are no wide tracking shots, no taking in the scenery, no lavish look at the house, this is all dank and dark.

And totally gripping…

The movie is a lean 89 minutes and those minutes absolutely whizz by, the tension just grows and grows as the narrative twists and turns...

You’ll be seeing plenty more of Pugh, Jarvis and Oldroyd...

Next up for Pugh is a role in the hotly-tipped wrestling drama Fighting With My Family, while Jarvis has a small role in Alex Garland’s Annihilation. Expect those roles to get much bigger in the not too distant future.

As for Oldroyd, we can’t wait to see what he does next...
