Long-awaited movie adaptation of Wicked finally gets a release date

The movie adaptation of hugely successful stage musical Wicked has finally been given a release date.

The adaptation has been in development for a long time, but has finally been confirmed to hit cinemas on December 20th in 2019, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Stephen Daldry, who has previously directed the likes of Billy Elliot, The Hours and The Reader, will direct, with Marc Platt producing. Writer Winnie Holzman and composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz, collaborators on the Broadway show, are reuniting for the film adaptation.

Wicked is an alternative telling of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz and L. Frank Baum's classic 1900 story of the same name, in this case told from the perspective of the witches. It has grossed over $4 billion across the world and is the 10th longest running Broadway show of all time.

You can check out the musical's soundtrack here in our online store.
