Mamma Mia sequel confirmed for 2018

A sequel to hugely successful musical Mamma Mia is on the way.

The musical, which starred Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Dominic Cooper, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth, was released in June 2008 and went on to gross over $600 million at the box office.

A sequel, which is to be titled Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, is now underway with Ol Parker, writer of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and its sequel, onboard to write and direct.

It is due to arrive in cinemas on July 20th in 2018.

Streep, Firth, Seyfried and Brosnan are all expected to return to reprise their roles, while a number of Abba songs that did not make it to the first movie will be included.

The original movie told the story of Sophie Sheridan, a young woman who is about to be married when she discovers that any one of three men could be her father. Determined to find out she invites all three to the wedding without telling her mother.

The new movie will be both a prequel and a sequel to the original, with part of the story set in the present with the returning cast members and new actors playing younger versions of Streep, Brosnan and Firth for part of the story that is set in the past.
