Mark Wahlberg signs up to play the Six Billion Dollar Man

Mark Wahlberg has signed up to star in a big-budget Hollywood reboot of The Six Billion Dollar Man.

The original show was based on the 1972 novel Cyborg by Martin Caidin, which then spawned the popular TV series The Six Million Dollar Man in the 1970s starring Lee Majors.

The Six Billion Dollar Man is former astronaut Steve Austin, who, after a plane crash, is fitted with bionic replacements — both legs, his right arm and left eye. With super-human power, he becomes a force to be reckoned with for the government as a secret agent for the Office of Scientific Intelligence.

There has been talk of a big-screen return for the character for almost 20 years, but it seems that with Wahlberg in the lead role and Peter Berg, who has directed the likes of Battleship and Lone Survivor, in the director's chair, it seems it is finally set to happen, reports Deadline.

Production on the reboot is expected to begin next year, with a 2016 release date looking likely.
