Over the next 10 days we're going to be previewing 100 of 2017's best movies. We begin today with superheroes and icons...

 

Wonder Woman

 

What Is It?

After making her debut in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, Gal Gadot goes it alone in this big budget origin story.

 

Who’s In It?

It stars Gadot as Diana Prince with Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen, David Thewlis, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Ewen Bremner and Saïd Taghmaoui among the supporting cast. Chris Pine stars as Steve Trevor, Wonder Woman's key love interest.

 

And Who’s Behind The Camera?

Patty Jenkins, who directed Charlize Theron to a Best Actress Oscar in Monster, is on directorial duties. She works from a script from Allan Heinberg and DC Comics don Geoff Johns.

 

Any Plot Details?

The movie serves as Prince's origin story and tells of how she was raised on a sheltered island and trained to be an unconquerable fighter. But after Trevor, a fighter pilot, crashes on the island and tells her about a world war that is happening, she leaves her home to try to stop the war.



When Can I See It?

It’s due in cinemas on June 2nd in 2017.

Justice League

 

What Is It?

Justice League is to DC what the Avengers is to Marvel, it unites Ben Affleck's Batman, Henry Cavill's Superman, Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher's Cyborg, Ezra Miller's The Flash and Jason Momoa's Aquaman for the first time.

 

Who’s In It?

As well as the above, there are roles for J.K. Simmons who plays Commissioner Gordon, Willem Dafoe and Amber Heard, who make their debuts ahead of bigger roles in Aquaman, and Ciaran Hinds, who plays villain Steppenwolf. Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Jeremy Irons, Jesse Eisenberg and Connie Nielsen will also reprise their roles as Lois Lane, Martha Kent, Alfred Pennyworth, Lex Luthor and Queen Hippolyta respectively.

 

And Who’s Behind The Camera?

Zack Snyder went straight from Dawn Of Justice to Justice League. He works from a script from Chris Terrio, who wrote Argo as well as Batman V Superman.

 

Any Plot Details?

Picking up straight after the events of Dawn Of Justice we follow Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince as they assemble a team of superheroes to try and counter the threat from a catastrophic new threat.

It’s due to hit cinemas on November 17th.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2

 

What Is It?

The sequel to 2014’s hugely successful movie.

 

Who’s In It?

Kurt Russell, The Great Gatsby's Elizabeth Debicki, The Knick's Chris Sullivan and French actress Pom Klementieff all join the cast, they will work alongside a returning Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista and voice stars Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel in the sequel.

 

And Who’s Behind The Camera?

James Gunn returns to both directing and writing duties.

 

Any Plot Details?

The sequel begins two months after the group’s debut ended and follows them on another galaxy-crossing quest, a quest that also sees them trying to learn more about the true parentage of Pratt’s Peter Quill.

Thor: Ragnarok

 

What Is It?

The third solo outing for Thor, Loki, Odin and the gang, this time in a more comedic manner...

 

Who’s In It?

Jeff Goldblum, Cate Blanchett, Creed star Tessa Thompson, Dredd's Karl Urban and Mark Ruffalo are all new additions to the cast for Thor's third solo outing. They join a returning Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Anthony Hopkins and Jaime Alexander.

Now this is an interesting pick. Taika Waititi, best known for his work writing and directing Flight Of The Conchords and vampire spoof What We Do In The Shadows.

 

Any Plot Details?

There’s actually not much out there plot wise, but we left things with Loki impersonating Odin on the throne of Asgard and his brother believing him dead, that’s going to take some explaining...

Spider-Man: Homecoming

 

What Is It?

After 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 failed to meet the expectations of fans or studio heads, it was decided that a reboot was needed and Andrew Garfield was relieved of duties as the web slinger. Now part of the Marvel Universe once again after Sony and Disney came to an agreement, 2017 will see newcomer step into the role in his origin story after debuting in Captain America: Civil War.

 

Who’s In It?

Starring alongside Holland are Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Jon Favreau, Angourie Rice, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly, Bokeem Woodbine, Marisa Tomei, and Robert Downey Jr.

 

And Who’s Behind The Camera?

Jon Watts, who made a splash with his 2015 debut Cop Car, directs the movie.

 

Any Plot Details?

In this new movie we find Peter Parker trying to balance his life as an ordinary high school student in Queens, New York City with fighting crime as his superhero alter ego Spider-Man. His biggest challenge comes from Keaton's Vulture, the movie's key villain.

What Is It?

Hugh Jackman takes the claws for the final time as Wolverine in a sombre end to his time in the X-Men universe.

Aside from Jackman you’ve got Patrick Stewart, Richard E. Grant, Stephen Merchant and Narcos' star Boyd Holbrook.

 

And Who’s Behind The Camera?

James Mangold, who directed both previous Wolverine solo outings, takes control once again. He works from a script from Michael Green and Scott Frank.

 

Any Plot Details?

This movie is set after the epilogue of X-Men: Days of Future Past. Now older, Logan has made a promise not to use his claws for bloody purposes, with his healing factor weakened as a result.

But, even though he is all but retired, he is forced to become Wolverine one last time when Professor Xavier reveals to him that the rest of the remaining mutants in the world are being turned into weapons by a sinister new organisation.

Power Rangers

 

What Is It?

The long-awaited reboot of the iconic 1990’s TV series, with added big budget.

 

Who’s In It?

The film will star Becky G as Yellow Ranger Trini, Ludi Lin as Black Ranger Zack, Dacre Montgomery as Red Ranger Jason, Naomi Scott as Pink Ranger Kimberly, and RJ Cyler as Blue Ranger Billy, with Elizabeth Banks playing villain Rita Repulsa.

 

And Who’s Behind The Camera?

Dean Israelite, best known for directing sci-fi teen hit Project Almanac, is in charge of this one. He directs from a script from Kong: Skull Island writer John Gatins.

 

Any Plot Details?

This new reboot follows five troubled teenage student outcasts named Zack, Kimberly, Billy, Trini, and Jason, who are chosen by mentor Zordon to become the Power Rangers after learning that their small town of Angel Grove and the world are threatened by an alien force led by Rita Repulsa.

King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword

 

What Is It?

The iconic legend of King Arthur is dusted off once more for the blockbuster treatment by Warner Brothers.

 

Who’s In It?

Sons Of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam will lead the film as King Arthur, with Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey playing Guinevere, Eric Bana playing Uther Pendragon, Arthur's father and Jude Law as villain Vortigen.

 

And Who’s Behind The Camera?

Guy Ritchie, giving his traditional tough and streetwise take on things. Joby Harold, original adapter of Edge Of Tomorrow, has provided the script.

 

Any Plot Details?

This movie finds Arthur on the streets, completely unaware that he is actually the one true king until he draws the sword Excalibur from the stone. This discovery gets Arthur a dilemma, will he throw his lot in with the Resistance and an enigmatic young woman named Guinevere and unite the people to defeat the tyrant Vortigern? Or will he choose a quieter life? You can probably guess the answer...

The beloved anime gets a glossy Hollywood adaptation with Scarlett Johansson leading the way.

Rupert Sanders, director of Snow White And The Huntsman. The script comes from Jonathan Herman and Jamie Moss.

Johansson stars as Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9 devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists.

What Is It?
