10 Things You Didn’t Know About… Mrs Brown’s Boys

Mrs Brown’s Boys is a true comedy phenomenon. The show’s been on the air for five years and in that time only 28 episodes have been broadcast, but it’s grown into an arena filling live show, a big screen worthy franchise and a real household name.

Created by comedian Brendan O’Carroll, the show features O’Carroll in drag as Agnes Brown, trying her best to look after her useless bunch of grown-up children in front of a live studio audience.

The show’s two recent Christmas specials are released in a new DVD package today and to celebrate we’ve put together 10 things you didn’t know about this comedy juggernaut…

The show began almost 25 years ago…

Mrs Brown’s Boys began life as a radio show on RTÉ 2fm, an Irish radio station, in 1992. It quickly became very popular with Brendan O’Carroll revealing that Dublin would grind to a halt to hear its five minute bursts of hilarity.

It was a slightly different thing then…

When the programme began it was Browne with an extra ‘E’, over the years though that ‘E’ has been removed and it’s now the more common Brown...

Agnes Brown was first put on screen by Anjelica Huston…

After the radio show O’ Carroll took Mrs Brown into a series of books, one of which was called The Mammy and caught the eye of Addams Family star Anjelica Huston, who directed and starred in the movie adaptation. Unfortunately it was a box office flop when it came out in 1999…

The cast is almost entirely made up of creator Brendan O’Connell’s family…

When it came to casting the show, O’Carroll didn’t look much beyond his own family. Jennifer Gibney who plays Cathy is Brendan's wife, Eilish O'Carroll, who plays Winnie is his sister, Fiona O'Carroll who portrays Maria is Brendan's daughter, Buster, who is played by Danny O'Carroll, his son, Amanda Woods (Betty) is Brendan's daughter-in-law and Martin Delany (Trevor) is his son-in-law.

The TV show’s production was delayed by a full year by Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand…

Mrs Brown’s Boys was first commissioned for the BBC by producer Stephen McCrum, but once the script was ready and filming all set to go, a major incident got in the way. After Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross sparked a national scandal with their ill-planned phone call to veteran actor Andrew Sachs the BBC rolled back all their plans for new comedy and anything too sweary was put on hold. It delayed the start of Mrs Brown’s Boys by a full year.

It goes out as Mme Lebrun in Canada…

The show is broadcast around the world and has particularly large followings in Australia and Canada, especially in Quebec where it’s named Mme Lebrun...

Critics have never been keen on the show…

When it first hit UK screens it’s fair to say critics weren’t fans, most reviews were at best lukewarm, while The Independent’s Grace Dent went as far as to call it “the worst comedy ever made”...

But audiences have loved it from the start…

By the time the third episode of the show’s first season was broadcast on BBC One the viewing figures was already up to almost three million and a whopping 12 million viewers watched the show’s 2015 Christmas special. Add that to thousands of DVDs sold and almost $30 million in box office receipts from 2014’s Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie and you’ve a hell of a hit...

Brexit has prevented a sequel to D’Movie…

O’Carroll revealed earlier this year that he had been planning to shoot the sequel to Mrs Brown’s Boy D’Movie, but it was scuppered by the UK’s decision to leave the European Union. His producers want to wait until the pound settles down apparently…

They’ll be more Mrs Brown until at least 2020…

Responding to rumours at the beginning of 2015, O’Carroll angrily denied rumours that he would be taking a break from the show and revealed that he has committed to produce new Christmas specials for the BBC every year up until 2020.
