Philomena – What You Need To Know
Just in time for Mother's Day, Philomena, the heart-warming story of a mother's journey to find her long-lost son is hitting DVD shelves, here's what you need to know about it.
What’s the plot?
Martin Sixsmith has just lost his job as a Labour Party political adviser and is looking for a new challenge, he's contemplating writing a book on Russian history when, by chance, he's made aware of the story of Philomena.
Philomena is a woman who has spent her life searching for her son who was taken away from her decades ago after she became pregnant and was forced to live in a convent. Initially sceptical about her story, Martin eventually agrees to meet Philomena and is soon convinced to help her find her son. And off we go…
Who’s in it?
Judi Dench stars as the titular character, with Steve Coogan attempting to balance out his cinematic adventure as Alan Partridge by playing the altogether more grounded Martin Sixsmith. There are other small appearances by Games Of Thrones' Michelle Fairley, St Elmo's Fire's Mare Winningham and Anna Maxwell Martin, who also starred alongside Coogan in Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa.
It also boasts a script from Coogan and direction from Stephen Frears, he of The Queen, Tamara Drewe, High Fidelity and Dangerous Liaisons directing fame.
Does it deliver?
There are no shocks or surprises, but if you're in the mood for a tear-jerking and surprisingly hopeful take on a human interest story, then this will go down a treat.
Philomena is released on DVD on Blu-Ray on Monday (March 24th).
