Ridley Scott reveals title of follow-up to Alien: Covenant and new plot details
Ridley Scott has revealed the working title for his next movie in his Alien prequel trilogy.
Scott, who is currently putting the finishing touches to Alien: Covenant, told Fandango that the new movie will be Awakening and it will set before Alien: Covenant.
He said: "There will be another one before we kind of literally and logically, clockwise, back into the original Alien ... It will go Prometheus, Awakening, Covenant... Fairly integral where this colonisation ship is on the way."
Then asked about the future of the franchise, Scott confirmed he is planning another trilogy set in the Alien universe, adding: "If this is successful, and then the next one, and then there will definitely be three more."
Scott also opened up about how the movie would be different from Prometheus and he promised a "gorier and smarter movie".
He said: "It's beginning to answer the who and why. It's definitely gorier, and smarter. In it, we raise some very interesting questions about the position and possibility of AI against human condition, and it crosses into the zone of apartheid. The knee-jerk was to create a second-class citizen, even if he is superior to everyone."
He continued: "So the natural thing to do at the end of Prometheus was to send them off together because when you think you've got it, you've got to keep the characters alive, as opposed to killing them. And [Covenant] starts to answer the who and why."
Alien: Covenant stars Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace, who return from Prometheus. They are joined by a newly cast Danny McBride, Katherine Waterston, Demián Bichir, Jussie Smollett, Amy Seimetz, Carmen Ejogo, Callie Hernandez, Billy Crudup, James Franco, Alexander England and Benjamin Rigby.
Last year the movie saw its release date brought forward. The movie was originally due to be released on August 4th next year but has now seen its release date brought forward to May 12th in 2017.
It is the follow-up to Prometheus and picks up after the events of that movie. In this film, we follow the crew of the colony ship Covenant who find what they believe to be an uncharted paradise in a remote galaxy. Instead what the crew discover is a dark, dangerous world, whose sole inhabitant is the synthetic David, the survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.
A further sequel to Alien, this time directed by District 9's Neill Blomkamp, was in pre-production last year and was set to shoot in 2017, but has now been shelved due to Scott's plans.
