Spider-Man: Homecoming - Five Reasons You’ll Love It

Normally when a movie studio calls for a complete overhaul of a major franchise, it’s because they’ve got a bomb on their hands, but that certainly wasn’t the case the last time we saw Spider-Man topping the bill on the big screen.

With Andrew Garfield in the title role, his second outing The Amazing Spider-Man 2, grossed over $700 million at the box office and looked all set to roll out into spin-offs and a third instalment, but then Marvel came calling.

The rights for Spider-Man have resided with Sony since 2000 when Marvel Studios was still in its infancy, and they’ve made five films without any involvement from the comic book behemoth. But now, with the Marvel Cinematic Universe the dominant force in cinema, when the chance was offered to Sony to take Spider-Man into the MCU, but retain the rights to his solo outings, it was a chance they couldn’t turn down.

This new broom meant big changes. Garfield was out and in comes newcomer Tom Holland, who with this new movie gets his first standalone film as the web slinger after he made his debut in Captain America: Civil War.

Starring alongside Holland are Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Jon Favreau, Angourie Rice, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly, Bokeem Woodbine, Marisa Tomei, and Robert Downey Jr. Cop Car director Jon Watts is in the director's chair.

In this new movie, we find Peter Parker trying to balance his life as an ordinary high school student in Queens, New York City with fighting crime as his superhero alter ego Spider-Man while trying to impress his mentor, Mr Tony Stark. His biggest challenge comes from Keaton's Vulture, the movie's key villain.

The movie hits cinemas on Wednesday (July 5th) and will be available to pre-order on DVD, Blu-Ray, 4K and limited edition Blu-Ray steelbook from hmv’s online store on the same day. But before that, we caught an early screening and have rounded up five reasons why you’ll love it…

The action set pieces are something else…

The whole movie looks incredible, but the fight sequences, especially Spider-Man’s epic showdowns with The Vulture, are absolutely stunning.

It’s very, very funny…

The mixture of good one-liners, slapstick falls and the odd bit of gross-out is a perfect combination, you’ll be laughing loudly and often.

Tom Holland is an engaging, sparky bit of casting…

Holland is 21 now and was 19 when he scored the role of the web-slinger, but he already looks so comfortable in the role. Sparky, confident and bright, he’s a radical move away from Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s brooding take on the character.

Michael Keaton is on great form…

Keaton plays The Vulture, a hardened scrap merchant who has made an excellent living picking up the materials left behind by all the Avengers’ various encounters and fashioning them into deadly weapons. He takes on the role with a snarl and a swagger, but also a twinkle in his eye, it’s great fun to take in.

It’s taut, neat and self-contained…

If there’s one criticism of Marvel’s output, it’s that the continued progress from movie to movie means every movie has marks to hit to set up the next outing, but there are only a few flickers of that in Spider-Man. It’s a tight, zippy 133 minutes and motors along.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is released into UK cinemas on July 5th and will be available to pre-order on DVD from hmv’s online store on the same day.
