Star Wars: The Force Awakens becomes the highest-grossing film of all time in the US
Star Wars: The Force Awakens has become the highest grossing movie of all time in the US, beating the record set by Avatar.
Disney confirmed the news yesterday (January 6th), announcing that the blockbuster had now surpassed Avatar's box office haul of $760.50 million and had done so in just 20 days.
The news was announced on the official Star Wars website along with a statement that reads as follows: "We are proud of these records, but know that they would not be possible without fans' enthusiasm and continued support. We feel it here and it drives us every day, and it will continue to in the very bright future of Star Wars. There has indeed been an awakening - and it's all thanks to you."
Avatar still holds the worldwide record of $2.8 billion, but Star Wars is catching up, its worldwide gross is currently just under $1.6 billion and it has yet to open in China.
The movie is also on course to become the highest grossing movie in UK box office history, it is currently in second place with £97.4 million, just behind Skyfall which currently holds the record with takings of £102.9 million.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is in cinemas now and is available to pre-order on DVD and Blu-Ray on the right-hand side of the page.
