Star Wars: The Force Awakens - Five Reasons You'll Love It

There have been a lot of huge movies unveiled this year, but JJ Abrams’ reboot of Star Wars is undoubtedly the biggest.

Original stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Peter Mayhew and Anthony Daniels are all back and they’re joined by new stars Adam Driver, Gwendoline Christie, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Andy Serkis and Domhnall Gleeson for a rip-roaring new adventure.

Set 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi we now find ourselves in a situation where the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire have become the Resistance and the First Order and war is brewing…

It's out on DVD on Monday (April 18th) and available to pre-order on the right-hand side of the page, but we caught an early screening of the movie and adored it, here are five reasons why we think you’ll love it too...

It’s back to the old school…

From the moment the lights go down and the familiar yellow writing begins to scroll down the screen it becomes clear that Abrams has taken care to bring back everything that fans love about the original movies. The cuts, the sets, the humour, all of it, the spirit of adventure and boundless wonder that drew everyone in all those years ago is back with a vengeance.

The old gang are back, but this is Daisy Ridley and John Boyega’s story…

Ford, Hamill and Fisher are all key components of the story, but the real heart of this movie is the young British pair. Ridley plays Rey, a scavenger who is suddenly forced to become an ass kicking fighter after she meets Boyega’s Finn, a stormtrooper who’s turned his back on the First Order. Together they make an awesome pair and they’ll be catapulted straight to A-Listers...

Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren is sensational…

The Girls star isn’t a natural choice for a villain, in fact in most of his career so far he’s played charming, but a bit useless types, but as Kylo Ren, a Jedi who has been tempted over to the dark side, he’s powerful and really, really terrifying. An inspired bit of casting.

It looks incredible…

This is a $200 million blockbuster so there might be the odd bit of green screen, but this looks and feels far more physical than Lucas’ later films. It’s back to the sand, the vast desolate landscapes contrasted with beautiful lush forests. Don’t get us wrong, the effects are incredible and the epic space battles, of which there are plenty of, look brilliant, but this is a much more visceral film and all the better for it.

It’s just so much fun…

Sure it’s reverential, a movie in love with the original trilogy, there are easter eggs galore for fans out there and it’s fantastic to see Ford, Fisher and Hamill back in the game, but Abrams has let none of this get in the way of creating a rip-roaring space opera. It’s fast, it’s very funny and filled the same child-like wonder that’s all over the originals. This will delight older fans and spawn a generation of new ones...
