Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Five Reasons You’ll Love It

If there were any nerves about the relaunch of Star Wars at the end of 2015, two billion dollars in box office receipts and rave reviews all around will have settled them. The movie that did that, The Force Awakens set things up nicely for the future of the franchise, which now continues with The Last Jedi.

For this instalment, we have a new director, Rian Johnson, who has also provided the script. He commands Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis and the late Carrie Fisher, who all return for the new movie, while Benicio del Toro, Laura Dern and Kelly Marie Tran join the cast.

Plot-wise, there’s not too much we can say, but this is how things begin. We find Daisy Ridley’s Ren trying to coax Luke Skywalker back into action and to try and discover her true nature, all the while the rest of her fellow rebels are in more danger than ever with a revitalised First Order closing in.

The movie arrives in UK cinemas on Thursday (December 14th) and will be available to pre-order in hmv’s online store on the same day, but we caught an early screening and are delighted to be able to present to you five reasons why we think you’ll love it...

It’s surprisingly funny…

The Force Awakens had its moments of humour, but the laughs are constant and well-timed in The Last Jedi. Everyone gets in on the act, even Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker, who has one particularly sizzling put down...

The scale is incredible and the action sequences are stunning…

As you’d expect when you’ve got two billion dollars in the bank, there’s been no expense spared in creating the visual sequences for this movie. Particularly stunning is a trip to a casino on a faraway planet and a unique footrace. Look out for it...

The newcomers really come to the fore in this new movie…

We got to know Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren, Daisy Ridley’s Rey, John Boyega’s Finn, Oscar Isaac’s Poe and Domhnall Gleeson’s General Hux well in The Force Awakens, but in this movie, they really hit their strides and deliver confident and sparky performances.

Things are set up beautifully for an epic finale…

As we said, spoilers, you won’t find any, but we can say that the movie’s ending sets things up beautifully for a fiery and jaw-dropping final act of this particular saga. Roll on 2019.

We can’t wait to see where Rian Johnson takes his own trilogy...

We had a little chat with the director (you can see it tomorrow) and he wasn’t giving much away about his plans, but if he brings the vision, craft, depth and nuance that he gives The Last Jedi to this new series, well, it’ll be quite something...
