The Butler – What You Need To Know…

The Butler, the critically acclaimed drama that brings to life the story of Eugene Allen, the man who acted as a butler in the White House for 34 years, comes to DVD on Monday (March 10th), here's what you need to know about it…

What’s the plot?

In this adaptation, Allen has been rechristened as Cecil Gaines and we start the story with him as an elderly man recounting his life. We see his harrowing upbringing on a cotton plantation in 1926 Macon, Georgia, by his sharecropping parents, his training as a house servant, his progression and his eventual hiring as a butler at the White House, a position he would hold until 1986…

Who’s in it?

Forest Whittaker takes the role of Cecil Gaines, the character heavily based on Eugene Allen, the real butler as it were. Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey plays his wife Gloria with Mariah Carey bizarrely playing his mother and David Banner as his father.

For the parade of historical figures, it's more a question of who isn't in it. Liev Schreiber, Minka Kelly, John Cusack, Alan Rickman and Robin Williams all pop up at one point, as do Cuba Gooding Jnr and Lenny Kravitz as some of Gaines' co-workers.

Does it deliver?

As a piece of worthy cinema? Absolutely. Whittaker is superb in the leading role as is Winfrey, while the high-profile guest stars constantly keep you interested. It feels a little more like someone you ought to watch than a film you can really enjoy, but it's superbly acted and very well-executed. More of a Sunday afternoon watch than a Friday night kick-back…

The Butler is released on DVD and Blu-Ray on Monday (March 10th).
