10 Things You Didn’t Know About… The Good Wife

It’s been on the air for seven years and 156 episodes, but sadly earlier this year the smash hit legal drama took its final bow and ended after seven seasons.

The show follows the fortunes of Alicia Florrick, a middle-aged woman who is forced back into the high-pressured world of lawyers. After stepping aside to enjoy family life and support her husband's career, she makes an unexpected return to the frontline when her husband is disgraced and imprisoned after a humiliating sex and corruption scandal.

It has featured an all-star cast with E.R.’s Julianna Margulies leading the way as Florrick and Sex In The City’s Chris Noth as her troubled husband Peter. They’re joined by the likes of Michael J. Fox, Matt Czurchry, Christine Baranski, Josh Charles, Matthew Goode, Mamie Gummer, Alan Cumming, Archie Panjabi and Mackenzie Vega who have all provided key supporting roles during the show’s run.

You can own the entire saga on DVD from today (it’s available to order on the right-hand side of the page) and to celebrate its release we thought we’d dig through the archives and round up 10 things you didn’t know about The Good Wife...

Julianna Margulies was only third choice for the role of Alicia Florrick…

Despite being one of the stars of E.R., it turns out Margulies was only third in line for the role of Alicia. Producers first offered it to Helen Hunt and Ashley Judd before they came to Margulies.

But she did very well out of the role by the end…

By the time the series came to a close the actress was earning a reported $180,000 per episode.

And has bagged a clutch of awards…

In all she’s picked up two Best Actress Emmys and been nominated four times. Not bad for third pick.

There’s a very specific formula to the episode titles…

Showrunners Robert and Michelle King have hit upon a specific system when it comes to titling their episodes. The number of words in each title corresponds to the season number. But, once the show reached season four and four letters, the number of words in episode titles started to decrease again to continue the symmetry. Fans could clearly tell the game was up when it got to season seven with the the pattern: 1-2-3-4-3-2-1.

Working on the show almost killed Kristin Chenowith…

The star, best known for his giant voice and turn in Glee, suffered a nasty accident while filming her 2012 guest appearance on the show. During filming a piece of lighting equipment fell on her. The accident left her with a skull fracture and pain in her hips and ribs. Not nice at all...

There have been of big name guest stars…

Over the course of the show’s seventh series there have been plenty of stars who’ve dipped in for a while. Friends’ Matthew Perry, Pitch Perfect star Anna Camp, Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera and Narcos’ Pedro Pascal are among the biggest of them.

Alan Cumming’s Eli was inspired by a famous Chicago mayor...

Cumming’s Eli is a fan favourite on the show and he was inspired by one of Chicago’s favourite sons, Rahm Emanuel, who served as an advisor to Bill Clinton, chief of staff to Barack Obama and is now mayor of Chicago.

Emanuel’s brother inspired another, very different, TV character…

Rahm’s brother Ariel Emanuel is a Hollywood agent and the direct inspiration for Ari Gold, the foul-mouthed agent at the centre of Entourage.

It might be based in Chicago, but it’s shot in New York…

To suit Julianna Margulies, who lives in the Big Apple, producers decided to base themselves there. The tax breaks provided for crews who film in the city didn’t hurt either...

A spin-off is on the way...

If you’ve been left bereft by the show’s end, fear not; a spin-off with Christine Baranski’s Diane front and centre is on the way. She’ll be joined by Game Of Thrones star Rose Leslie and Get Shorty’s Delroy Lindo in the new show. It’ll premiere in the US in February of next year.

The seventh and final season of The Good Wife is out now and available here in hmv’s online store.
