The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug – Five reasons you'll love it!

The second instalment of The Hobbit hits cinemas today and is sure to be one of 2014's biggest selling DVDs when it hits stores in the spring. We caught a preview screening earlier this week and you've got so much to look forward to. Here are five such reasons to get excited about seeing Peter Jackson's new epic…

There's More Action…

There's lots more action, significantly more than the first one. This is a far, far less talky film and puts much more focus on action. In particular, the sequence where the dwarves and Bilbo escape from the elves in beer barrels is spectacularly put together, with real verve and rhythm. Then, of course, there's the dragon…

There Are More Dragons…

Just one more dragon to be precise, but he's quite magnificent. Voiced superbly by Benedict Cumberbatch, Jackson's team have brought this monstrous beast to life supremely. He looks enormous, nasty and, at times, genuinely terrifying.

There Are More Elves…

The Elves play a big part in this sequel, with Orlando Bloom returning as Legolas and Evangeline Lily debuting as new character Tauriel. The Elves, with their sharp tongues and graceful combat skills, bring a great new dimension to the film.

There Are More Laughs…

There was an awful lot of back story to get through in the first film and amid all the heavy story-telling of the rack and ruin caused to the dwarves by Smaug, there wasn't a lot of room for jokes. This film feels much lighter and there's plenty of comic relief among the action.

There Are No Songs…

The songs. Some people loved that An Unexpected Journey included the dwarves having a good old sing-song, most people thought it was something they could have done without. There are no songs this time. On balance, that's probably a good thing.

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug is in cinemas now and out on DVD in spring 2014.
