The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Pt. 1 - Five Reasons You'll Love It

The phenomenon that is The Hunger Games franchise returns with the first part of the final chapter Mockingjay – Part 1.  The first two films took over $1.5 billion, so we think it’s safe to say that Suzanne Collins’ young adult book franchise has been a smash hit and with one more film to come the effect is going to continue to snowball!

We join Katniss Everdeen in District 13 after being rescued from the Quarter Quell games where she shattered the force field, jump starting the rebellion uprising. The girl on fire may be a bit bedraggled and shell shocked but she must decide whether she will become the face of the rebellion and lead the sectors against the Capitol. This is a continuation of the story, the beginning of the end and it’s going to get heated…

We caught an early screening and we’ve rounded up five reasons why you’ll love it…

The script stays true to the best bits of the book...

For those who have read the book, compared to reading the first two, it may have taken you longer to get through Mockingjay. The games are over and this time we return to a world of greed, war and rebellion with the first half of the book follows Katniss getting ready to choose to be the Mockingjay and lead the fight. The script does well to follow the main stories in the book such as Katniss’ torrid relationships with Gale and Peeta, her visceral hatred for President Snow and her emotional singing rendition of ‘Hanging tree’ but it also gives you plenty of action and drama...

The rebellion is growing...

It may be the beginning of the rebellion, but it grows in size and power quickly, provoking some explosive action set pieces. We're shown harrowing images of a completely destroyed District 12 complete with the remains of the population left burnt.  Multiple assassinations in districts but also retaliations with people bombing the peace keepers. The rebellion is growing like a domino effect, everyone is joining forces, it's relentless...

It's both brilliant and devastating to see Philip Seymour Hoffman...

After the devastating news of his passing earlier in the year it is a privilege to see him back as Plutarch Heavensbee, the film is dedicated to the talented actor. Happily it isn’t the last we will see of him.

Elizabeth Banks is on top form...

Reclaiming her role as the larger of life Effie Trinket, trying to adjust to life in District 13…is interesting. Used to the lavish standards and outlandish dress sense of the Capital, Effie associates her standards of living as being a prisoner of war and it is highly entertaining…the horror at wearing the SAME grey jumpsuit as everyone else…

You’ll be waiting with baited breathe for the final film...

One chapter down and the grand finale is to come. It will be sad to see the end of this incredible series but next year better come quickly, after you see this you will be burning to see the final chapter.
