The Mortal Instruments TV series Shadowhunters gets go ahead

A new TV series based on The Mortal Instruments, the hugely successful run of novels from Cassandra Clare, has been given the go ahead and a full series will now be produced.

The six-book series has sold over 24 million copies across the world and was adapted into a big-budget Hollywood movie in 2013, with Lily Collins, Jared Harris and Jonathan Rhys Meyers among the cast members. However, it failed to set the box office alight, taking just $90 million against a budget of well over $60 million.

The TV series, which is to be titled Shadowhunters, will be broadcast on ABC in the US, with production slated to begin in May of this year in Toronto. There is no word on whether Collins or any of her co-stars from the movies will reprise their roles in the series.

Ed Decter, who has previously worked on Helix and Boy Meets World, will serve as the series' showrunner.
