The Wolf of Wall Street: Five Reasons You’ll Love It

Friday 17th January sees the UK cinematic release of Martins Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street, a film based on the memoirs of former Wall Street stockbroker and convicted fraudster Jordan Belfort.

The film is the fifth Scorsese flick to star Leonardo DiCaprio, who plays Belfort, and also stars Jonah Hill as Belfort’s right-hand man Donnie Azoff, as well as former Neighbours actress Margot Robbie who co-stars as Belfort’s second wife, Naomi.

We went to last week’s premiere in Leicester Square to check out the new film. Here are five reasons you’ll love it:

It’s funny…
The film is billed as a ‘black comedy’ and it’s probably the funniest Scorsese film since 1990’s Goodfellas. Most of the film’s laugh-out-loud moments come courtesy of the antics resulting from the ridiculous amount of drugs consumed by Belfort and his colleagues, especially the scene featuring Belfort and Donnie partaking in some Quaaludes that are well past their use-by date…

It’s rude…
Along with the huge amount of gratuitous nudity thanks to the near-constant engagement of prostitutes by Belfort and his staff, the film also drops a record-breaking 506 f-bombs during its 180-minute running time. If profanity isn’t your thing, this may not be the film for you, but for those who aren’t too easily offended it makes for very funny viewing.

It's got the DiCaprio-Scorsese connection…
This is the latest in a series of pair-ups between the actor and the veteran director that began in 2002 with Gangs of New York, and it may be their best collaboration yet. DiCaprio is effortless as the womanising, drug-abusing Belfort and you get the sense that there’s plenty more mileage in this partnership.

It features Jonah Hill’s best performance to date…
Hill has been around a while now and as a comedy actor he has put in some very funny performances in films like Superbad and 21 Jump Street, but his role in The Wolf of Wall Street as the unhinged Donnie is perhaps his most challenging yet. He rises to the occasion, showing a glimpse of what he’s capable of as an actor…. and he’s still very funny.

It's got an amazing soundtrack…
Alongside original music by Theodore Shapiro are a host of contemporary tracks that are varied and incredibly well chosen, featuring everybody from Romeo Void and Ian Dury to Malcolm McLaren and The Jimmy Castor Bunch.
