Thor: Ragnarok - Five Reasons You’ll Love It

Compared to his other friends in the Avengers, Thor, the God of Thunder, Prince of Asgard, has ironically felt like something of a weak link in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

His first solo effort did handsomely effort, grossing almost $450 million, but the second, 2013’s The Dark World, netted $644 million, a slam dunk by most yardsticks, but given Marvels’ remarkable record, it was the second lowest in the MCU for a sequel.

With that in mind, Kevin Feige and his counterparts have put together a very different kind of movie for their third run. Gone are the dark brooding aesthetics that Game Of Thrones’ director Alan Taylor brought to The Dark World and in comes Taika Waititi, best known for his work writing and directing vampire spoof What We Do In The Shadows and beloved comedy The Hunt For The Wilderpeople, who brings with him a colour and wild sense of humour.

The movie sees Mark Ruffalo, Cate Blanchett, Creed star Tessa Thompson, Dredd's Karl Urban and Jeff Goldblum added to the cast, they join a returning Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba and Anthony Hopkins.

In this film, Thor finds himself imprisoned on a mysterious pleasure planet and forced to head into a lethal gladiatorial contest against the Hulk, all the while, Hela, the goddess of death, is laying waste to his home of Asgard, he must find a way to make it home, save his people and prevent Ragnarok, the end of everything...

The movie arrives in cinemas on Tuesday (October 24th) and will be available to pre-order on hmv.com on DVD on the same day, but we caught an early screening of the movie and have put together five reasons why you’ll love it...

It’s very, very funny…

Thor’s first two outings were decidedly short on laughs, but this new adventure is the polar opposite with jokes coming thick and first. A big mix of slapstick hits and killer gags, you’ll find yourself laughing hard and often.

Chris Hemsworth takes the change of direction in his stride…

He’s spent the majority of the MCU being broody and stroppy and hot-headed, but he adjusts to Waititi’s change of pace and ramping up of the comedy superbly, he’s got a few of the movie’s best lines too...

Cate Blanchett is having the time of her life…

Blanchett plays Hela the Goddess of Death and goes full villainess, complete with a black catsuit and devilish crown. She’s all big hand gestures and cruel one-liners and is clearly really enjoying every moment...

The other new additions are superb too…

Waititi’s casting decisions all come off superbly, Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie is a total badass, Urban’s Skurge is a bludgeoning delight and as for Goldblum, he plays The Grand Master, a kind of Marvel take on Hugh Hefner, complete with silk pyjamas and a strange taste for entertainment. He’s a whole lot of fun.

It looks incredible…

The scale of this movie is enormous, it’s so bright and vibrant with spectacular action sequences and some truly amazing sets and other worlds…
