It had looked earlier this year like the chances of a sequel to the blockbuster, which was created and directed by Guillermo Del Toro, were slim after Legendary Pictures pulled the movie from its schedule and no replacement date was put in, but earlier this year it was confirmed that production will begin later this year and that Star Wars: The Force Awakens' John Boyega will playing a leading role.

Boyega, who is currently filming the sequel to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, will play the son of Idris Elba's Stacker Pentecost in the new movie. Scott Eastwood will also take a key role in the movie.

Steven S. DeKnight, best known as the creator of Spartacus: Blood and Sand and its assorted spin-offs, will direct the movie.

The movie starred Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi and Idris Elba and was set in the future where a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures wages on, in the midst of that a former pilot and a trainee are paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon and try to save humanity.
