Toby Jones to play villain in Sherlock's fourth series

Toby Jones, best known for his roles in Frost/Nixon and The Hunger Games, will play the villain in the fourth series of Sherlock.

The actor will join Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman for the show's fourth series and will play an iconic villain, though there's no word on which one it will be as yet. Filming for the new series began on Monday.

Speaking about his casting, Jones said: "I'm excited and intrigued by the character I shall be playing in Sherlock..."

The show's co-creator Steven Moffat added: "Delighted to have Toby Jones on board, bringing to life one of Doyle's finest villains", while co-creator Mark Gatiss said: "We're thrilled to welcome one of our finest actors to the Sherlock family. I know Toby will embrace the part with true relish!"

Sherlock, which returned at Christmas for a one-off special named The Abominable Bride, will broadcast its fourth series in 2017.
