Tom Cruise wanted for big-budget reboot of 1980s cult classic Highlander
Producers of a big-budget reboot of 1980s cult action thriller Highlander are attempting to recruit Tom Cruise to take a key role.
Cruise, who is currently shooting the fifth instalment of Mission Impossible, is being courted to take the role of Juan Ramirez, the lead character's mentor in the new reboot, a role originally played by Sean Connery.
According to The Wrap, Cruise has yet to enter talks with producers, but is very much first choice for the role.
Highlander originally starred Christopher Lambert, Connery, Clancy Brown, and Roxanne Hart, and told the story of Connor MacLeod, an immortal Scottish warrior on a quest for revenge against The Kurgan, a barbarian who has chased him across time as they battle for an all-powerful prize.
Cedric Nicolas-Troyan will make his directorial debut on the reboot, working to a script written by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway as well as Melissa Rosenberg.
Cruise's latest action epic, Edge Of Tomorrow, was released on DVD earlier this year.
