The new thriller is an adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's novel of the same name and marks the first time the author, best known for his novels Gravity's Rainbow and Vineland, has been adapted for the big screen.

Inherent Vice stars Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon and Josh Brolin, and tells the story of a Los Angeles private detective named Doc Sportello, who is hired by his ex-girlfriend to investigate a plot involving her rich lover, his scheming wife and her boyfriend.

The film will also star Owen Wilson, Benicio Del Toro, Martin Short, Jena Malone, Katherine Waterston and Joanna Newsom. It is due to premiere later this week at the New York Film Festival, before getting a full US release on December 12th. It will be released in the UK on January 30th 2015.

Inherent Vice is the follow-up to Anderson's acclaimed drama The Master, which scored three Oscar nominations.
