This week, it’s the iconic Buffy The Vampire Slayer….
What is it?
Created by Joss Whedon, now better known as the director of Avengers: Assemble, Buffy The Vampire Slayer started life as a Hollywood movie flop before being converted into a supremely successful TV show.
A brief summary of the plot goes a bit like this: Buffy Summers is a normal high-school girl with a particular gift. Chosen by fate to battle evil forces, she is possessed with dramatically increased physical strength, endurance, agility, accelerated healing, intuition, and a limited degree of clairvoyance, usually in the form of prophetic dreams. All of this helps her battle against evil forces, of which there are a lot…
Who’s in it?
Sarah Michelle Gellar stars as eponymous Buffy, with Willow Rosenberg (Alyson Hannigan) and Xander Harris (Nicholas Brendon) her close friends.
Brit acting royalty Anthony Head plays Giles, her watcher, who guides her, while Angel (Bones’ David Boreanaz), a vampire with a soul, and Spike, a vampire with questionable motives, act as Buffy’s love interests.
Why should I watch it?
Way before HBO took a punt on True Blood, or before intelligent vampire dramas like Byzantium and Let The Right One In hit screens, Whedon was bringing intelligence and depth to the vampire genre.
Gellar’s Buffy became an icon for thousands of girls and boys and all of the characters were adored by legions of fans.
It’s not dated either, this is an intelligent, thoughtful and very funny take on a genre that’s often dumb and hackworthy. Well worth revisiting.
Describe the show in three words…
Bloody, weird and whipsmart.
