Your Next Box Set: Fringe

On the lookout for a new boxset to spend your evenings devouring? Each week, hmv.com will be recommending you a series that you will have wishing those cold nights would go for a good while longer…

This week, we recommend sci-fi thrill-a-minute epic Fringe

What is it?

The show focuses around Olivia Dunham, a female FBI agent who is forced to work with an experienced scientist in order to explain and investigate a series of paranormal events. Eventually they form a team known as the Fringe Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

To investigate their weekly mysteries, the team uses fringe science and FBI investigative techniques, which are often related to mysteries surrounding a parallel universe.

Who’s in it?

Joshua Jackson, best known for his spell as Pacey on Dawson's Creek and as captain of the Mighty Ducks. Charlie Conway plays Peter Bishop, jack of all trades civilian consultant. Dunham is played by Anna Torv, key scientists Dr Walter Bishop by John Noble, Astrid Farnsworth by Jaskia Nicole and Fringe leader Philip Broyles is portrayed by The Wire star Lance Reddick.

Why should I watch it?

The comparisons are pretty obvious when it comes to likening Fringe to other TV dramas, The X-Files, Altered States, and The Twilight Zone etc, but it has a style, aesthetic and swagger all of its own.

The writing is clever and witty and the storylines are relentlessly innovative, challenging and just as gripping episode after episode. Also, if you're the kind of viewer who loved Gravity, Alien and other action-led sci-fi, but draw the line at Farscape or Star Trek: The Next Generation, then you'll be fine with Fringe, it's about the characters and story above all things.

Describe the show in three words…

Crazy, charismatic, captivating.
