Your Next Box Set: Sons Of Anarchy

On the lookout for a new boxset to fill your long, dreary winter evenings with? Each week, hmv.com will be recommending you a series that will have you wishing those cold nights go on for a long while…

This week, we recommend epic biker-gang drama Sons Of Anarchy. Season Six is out on Monday (September 1st) Here’s why you will fall in love with it:

What it is?

Sons Of Anarchy tells the story of an outlaw motorcycle gang operating out of the fictional town of Charming in California. The Sons (as they are mostly called) are the real rulers of the town, controlling Charming through close community relationships, bribery, and violence. We follow the Sons as they battle to stay top dogs and the threats never stop coming….

Who’s in it?

The show’s charismatic lead is Jax Teller, played by Charlie Hunnam, who you’ll know from his leading roles in Pacific Rim and Green Street (he also recently signed up to play Christian Grey in the new adaptation of 50 Shades Of Grey, but has now left the project).

Alongside him and the leader of the Sons is Clay Morrow, played by Ron Pearlman. You’ll recognise him from films such as Blade II, Enemy At The Gates and, after a lot of prosthetic additions, as Hellboy.

Also in tow is Katey Sagal, who plays Jax’s mother and who you’ll have seen in hit US sitcom 8 Simple Rules. As well as this, TV veterans like Dayton Callie, Mark Boone Junior and Tommy Flanagan also have regular roles as members of the Sons.

Why should I watch it?

Because it’s incredibly well-written, intense, gripping, uncompromising television. Like all the best series, the characters’ flaws are there for all to see: these are violent, ruthless men, driven on by women who are just as frightening in their ways.

There are weeks when you’ll want to buy a Harley and run away to join SAMCRO and others where you’ll be truly shocked by them. You’ll follow the gang through thick and thin, as they do battle with the feds, rival gangs and, mostly often, themselves.

Describe the show in three words…

Brutal biker brilliance.
