Your Next Box Set: The Shield

On the lookout for a new boxset to spend your evenings devouring? Each week, hmv.com will be recommending you a series that you will have wishing those cold nights would go for a good while longer…

This week, we recommend The Shield, it's tough, it's uncompromising, it's brilliant…

What it is?

The Shield is a proper, tough-ass cop show, full of venomous dialogue, violence that often make you wince and story arcs that twist and turn like the most slippery of serpents.

It follows the lives of an inner-city Los Angeles police precinct, some of the cops live by the rules, but most live by their own laws; laws that are concerned with keeping their pockets lined and their reputation at its most fearsome.

Who’s in it?

Michael Chiklis anchors the show as the hard as nails, but morally compromised Vic Mackey with Django Unchained star Walton Goggins acting as his lieutenant Shane Vendrell and Kenny Johnson (Sons Of Anarchy, Dexter) as Curtis Lemansky, a similar lackey. Benito Martinez (newly cast in House Of Cards) plays David Aceveda, the captain of the precinct, who charges himself with bringing down Vic and his team of accomplices.

Why should I watch it?

The dialogue is snappy and pulls no punches, the storylines duck and weave, dragging you along as they go. Every character is just flawed enough to mistrust and just compelling enough to root for, you'll find yourself changing your mind about characters every single episode. All this adds up to some very compelling television.

Describe the show in three words…

Tough, traumatic, totally gripping. That's four. We're no good at this three words thing…
