"I enjoy introducing new people to my kind of music all the time" - hmv.com talks to Nathan Carter
Ahead of his visit to hmv Limerick on March 1st, we sat down with Nathan Carter, to talk about his love of Garth Brooks and how he got started with some low-key shows in his living room...
What was the first record you bought? And can you remember why you wanted it?
"It was one by Garth Brooks - I can't remember the album title, but I can guarantee that listening to it inspired me to become a singer and performer."
What did that record mean to you?
"I saw one of his shows when I was a lot younger, and I thought it was just amazing. Garth had put on the biggest show I had ever seen, and I have to be honest - I haven't seen anything like it since."
Which artist do you have the most records by - and why?
"I really like an American singer called Brad Paisley. I mean, I really admire Garth and many other people and bands, but Brad is my favourite. His songs are just class."
What's your favourite recorded format - vinyl, CD or mp3, and why?
"Oh, that has to be CD. I grew up with it also really liked the fact that on the CD booklets and sleeves you could read about the songs, their lyrics and all kinds of interesting stuff about the musicians."
When did you first realise that you wanted to be a singer and performer - and who was your first inspiration?
"From the age of three, I have been singing and performing. It started, obviously, with my family at parties and family get-togethers. I'd put on shows in the living room, and charge them to see me play! I only made them give me sweets, though, not money."
Some people have labelled you the poster boy of Irish country music, is that a title you like?
"It wasn't something I set out to do, but it's a compliment, and besides, I enjoy introducing new people to my kind of music all the time."
Finally, which Hollywood actor would play you in the movie of your life?
"After much consideration I'd have to go for Mark Wahlberg, but it's important for me to say that he's a lot cooler than me! Mind you, if he was me in the movie, I could then say I was friends with TED!"
Nathan Cater will be meeting fans and signing copies of his new album The Wagon Wheel Show at HMV Limerick on Saturday March 1st.
