"I want to leave a mark on this country's memory" - George The Poet opens up about his plans for his debut album
Rising rapper George The Poet has opened up about his progress on his debut album, which he said confirmed would be out later this year.
Speaking to hmv.com, the rapper said when asked about his plans for his first LP: "I don’t want to say too much. I’m working all the time on it. I’ve got lots to get down, but I don’t want to rush it. I can’t put a date or time on it at the moment."
Then asked if he was worried about the buzz that he'd picked up from nominations for the Brits Critics' Choice Award, BBC Sound of 2015 and MTV Brand New would die down if he took too long releasing an album, he said: "I want to make sure I take advantage of all this, but don’t rush it out before I feel good about it. I’m always writing, every day. I want to leave a mark on this country’s memory. I want people to know me and understand what I do. It'll come when it's ready."
The rapper went on to open up about his influences, telling hmv.com that he looked back to iconic rappers Tupac and Eminem when it came to inspiration.
Asked who he would say were his key influences, he said: "Tupac. Tupac Shakur is a big one, Nas too, Eminem for his lyrics. In terms of poets, there’s Maya Angelou, god rest her soul, she’s incredible. My favourite poets are rappers though, that’s where my main inspiration comes from."
