"The new record is finished!" - hmv.com catches up with Blackberry Smoke
Atlanta rockers Blackberry Smoke are an unlikely success story, but one built on the most old fashioned of foundations, hard and relentless touring. The band bring together classic 70s rock with a guttural, threatening edge, dropping banger after banger. They've spent the last three years touring their theird album The Whipporwill and have capped off the tour with a new live album titled Leave A Scar, which you can preview on the right of the page.
To celebrate the release, we chatted with frontman Charlie Starr about the live album and their brand new record...
How has 2014 been for you guys so far?
"We've had a great year so far. It's been pretty hectic! You’ve just released your live album, why did you decide to put out a live collection? When our fans started to give feedback about our first live DVD, one of the things mentioned was the fact that it would be nice to have an audio copy of the show. Great idea. A little later, we started to notice some "unofficial" live albums floating around, so we decided to make an "official" one."
You recorded your show in North Carolina, what made you decide to record that show for the album?
"Well, that show sold out three months or so in advance, and we know how rowdy our Carolina fans can get, so it seemed like the perfect show to record. They didn't let us down."
You’re coming back to the UK in October, what can fans expect from your live shows?
"We like to change the show up a good bit, so they may get something different every night. We'll definitely play a few new songs."
It must feel like you’ve been touring The Whippoorwill for a long time, how far along are you with your next record?
"The new record is just finished!! It'll come out some time next Spring."
Who have you worked with on the new record?
"We made the new record with Brendan O'Brien. He is just incredible."
How does this record move on from The Whippoorwill?
"Well, this record is more of a roller coaster ride, in my opinion. There are a few heavier songs and a few that are more vibey. Our rock n roll fans will be pleased!"
Finally, what albums have you loved in 2014 so far?
"I bought more new records this year than I have in a while. Jonathan Wilson, Rich Robinson, Jack White, Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell, Tom Petty, Justin Townes Earle, Shovels and Rope, Beck...just to name a few. I'm really looking forward to hearing the new AC/DC too."
