"This album is about our lives and our experiences..." - hmv.com talks to Against The Current
After making their names with a string of covers that garned millions of hits on YouTube, pop rockers Against The Current finally release their debut album In Our Bones this week. We spoke to singer Chrissy Costanza about making it...
When did you start work on In Our Bones? Have you been collecting songs for a while? Or are they recent tracks?
"We started the process back in January of 2015. However, didn't quite know it yet that we were working on our debut album. Initially we just thought we were working on an EP."
You worked with a number of different producers on the record? How did you find collaborating? Was it a fun album to record?
"Collaborating was incredible. We worked with some amazingly talented writers which in turn helped us to develop and grow as songwriters. The album was more stressful than fun to record just because we wanted everything to be perfect. But now it's just all excitement."
Which of the songs on the album took the most work to get right? And which came together most instantly?
"'Forget Me Now' went through a lot of changes. It started out sounding like a hip hop song and we were debating having a rapper feature on the track. It sounds nothing like the original now. A bunch of the tracks came together fairly quickly. 'One More Weekend' came together right away."
What’s the song on the album that you’re most proud of?
"I think the song I'm most proud of is 'Wasteland'. Vocally it was challenging. Trying to keep my voice soft yet powerful the whole time. It also is different than our usual style but it ended up being one of our strongest tracks."
What kind of album is this lyrically? Does it have a unifying theme?
"This album is about our lives and our experiences. It's supposed to be a well-rounded representation of all of the different emotions someone our age can go through. There's carefree tracks, angst-y tracks, confident tracks, so much..."
Who are some of your favourite lyricists?
"The Dangerous Summer's lyrics are some of my favourite of all time. They're a very different style than mine and I've always loved the way he expresses things."
When did you decide on the title of In Our Bones? Were there any other titles in contention?
"Originally the title was going to be Changing Faces but we couldn't really make sense of it. In Our Bones came through kind of last minute."
What are your plans to take the album out live?
"We have loads of live plans. We kick off the summer with the Vans Warped Tour and then we go everywhere else."
