BBC Music unveils longlist for Sound of 2018
The BBC have named 16 artists predicted to make a splash over the next year, announcing the longlist for Sound of 2018 this weekend.
Now in its 16th year, The BBC's annual 'Sound Of...' list has been something of a barometer for which new artists are likely to break through in the coming months, and while the predictions and projections aren't always accurate, there have been some prophetic forecasts over the last decade and a half with names such as Haim, Adele and Sam Smith having topped the list in previous years.
The artists in the running this year include UK rapper Yxng Bane, Manchester four-piece Pale Waves, Newcastle's Sam Fender, British singer-songwriter Jade Bird and London-born rapper Not3s. They join a list that also includes hotly-tipped Norwegian singer Sigrid, LA-based songstress Bille Ellish and rising R&B star Khalid.
Speaking after the announcement this weekend, veteran Radio 1 Annie Mac said: "Some acts will be brand new to UK audiences and many have already started to make an impact, I can't wait to be a part of their journey and see what the year ahead has in store for them all."
The top five will be revealed in a series of daily announcements beginning on January 8th next year, with the winner due to be announced on Clara Amfo's show on Friday January 12th.
