This Month's Vinyl Picks: June 2019
New albums from Kate Tempest, Bruce Springsteen and Madonna are among the best new vinyl releases coming your way in June...
Decca / Glassnote
Following up the first half of her two-parter which arrived in September last year under the title Infections of a Different Kind, Aurora returns this month with the album's second instalment. Different Kind of Human Step II makes its arrival in stores on June 7th and features 11 new tracks, including the singles 'Animal', 'The Seed' and 'The River'.
As with last year's instalment, Aurora is co-producing all the album's tracks with Magnus Skylstad, although there are also production contributions from the likes of Toby Gad and Mark Ralph. The vinyl edition is standard black wax affair and arrives in stores alongside all other formats on June 7th.
Kate Tempest: The Book of Traps and Lessons
American Recordings / Fiction
In the last couple of years, playwright, author, rapper and spoken word artist Kate Tempest finally seems to be earning the recognition she deserves and after two Mercury Prize-nominated albums in 2014's Everybody Down and 2016's Let Them Eat Chaos, Tempest returns this month with her third full-length effort.
The Book of Traps and Lessons has been crafted with her usual partner in crime Dan Carey, as well as legendary producer Rick Rubin, who took an interest in Tempest's music after seeing her perform a poem on Charlie Rose. The new album contains 11 new tracks including new single 'Firesmoke', which Tempest describes as "like a cleansing moment in the wider context of the record, in the same way that a relationship can be a cleansing moment in the wider context of a life." The vinyl edition is due to arrive alongside all other formats on June 14th.
Bruce Springsteen: Western Stars
Following the release of his autobiography Born to Run last year and his residency at New York's Walter Kerr Theatre, which spawned the Netflix concert special Springsteen on Broadway, The Boss returns this month with his first new album without the backing of the E Street Band since 2005's Devils & Dust.
His nineteenth studio album overall, Western Stars was recorded with producer Ron Aniello and includes a collection songs which, according to Springsteen himself, were inspired by “Southern California pop music” and artists including Burt Bacharach and Glen Campbell. The album arrives in stores on June 14th and alongside the standard black LP there's a also a limited edition version pressed onto smokey blue vinyl.
Madonna: Madame X
Madge returns this month with her 14th album in total and her first since 2015's Rebel Heart. Madame X sees Madonna embracing her new surroundings after moving to Lisbon and immersing herself in the resulting meting pot of cultural influences. As such, there's a very prevalent latin vibe across many the album's 13 tracks - sometimes very overtly, like on lead single 'Medellín'.
The vinyl edition arrives on several formats including a box set and a 2LP edition pressed onto standard black vinyl, all of which arrive in stores on June 14th.
Mark Ronson: Late Night Feelings
Has it really been four years since you couldn't go anywhere without hearing Mark Ronson's ubiquitous hit 'Uptown Funk'? Apparently so, and this month Ronson faces the daunting task of following the album it was taken from, Uptown Special, with his next full-length offering.
Late Night Feelings arrives on June and has been described by Ronson as both “definitely the best thing” he's ever done and as an album filled with “sad bangers”. As usual there is a laundry list of guests, which this time includes Miley Cyrus, Camila Cabello and Alicia Keys, among many others. The vinyl edition is a standard black LP and arrives with all other formats on June 21st.
ABBA: Voulez-Vous 40th Anniversary
Polar / UMC
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of their hit-packed 1979 album Voulez-Vous, Swedish pop masters ABBA are set to release a new anniversary edition this month, and it's one of the latest to make use of Abbey Road's half-speed mastering process, making this possibly the best-sounding version of the album yet.
There's a 2LP version of the album pressed onto 180g black vinyl, as well as a limited edition box set of 7x7" records on coloured vinyl. Each of the singles are also available as limited edition picture discs, but check with your local store as stock is expected to be very limited. All formats are due to arrive in stores on June 14th.
