hmv previews 2018's Best Albums... Pop

Over the next few days, we'll be previewing 90 of the best albums you can expect to hear in 2017. Most will come out, some inevitably won't, but they are all worth getting excited about.

Today it's the best of what pop has to offer...

Ellie Goulding

Title: TBC

Release Date: TBC

Aside from a couple of collaborations, it’s been a quiet year for Ellie Goulding, with her focus being on touring and festival appearances.

In 2018 though we’ll get a new record, her fourth, which looks set to feature an array of top-notch producers, including Klas Åhlund, Jim Eliot and Carl Falk. She has also worked with producer Bloodpop and British singer/songwriters Raye and Andrew Jackson.

Details on this one are still a little sketchy, but it is scheduled for 2018, we just don’t know when...

Charlie Puth

Title: Voicenotes

Release Date: January 19th

Pre-Order It Here.

The singer, best known for his duets with Wiz Khalifa on ‘See You Again’ and ‘We Don’t Talk Anymore’ with Selena Gomez, returns with a second album.

The album includes hit singles ‘Attention’ and ‘How Long’.

5 Seconds Of Summer

Title: TBC

Release Date: TBC

It took the Australian pop-rockers just a year to follow up their self-titled debut album with Sounds Good Feels Good, but they’ve taken a little longer with their third LP.

Mostly that’s down to some well-earned rest and a little down to a longer gestation process for many of the songs, but the band have confirmed that the record is done.

Among their collaborators for this album are pop-punk royalty Mark Hoppus and John Feldmann, but they’ve also been working with superstar DJ Steve Aoki. Now that’s a hook-up we’re keen to hear...

Clean Bandit

Title: TBC

Release Date: TBC

Will this be the year it finally comes out?

We were expecting a new Clean Bandit album in 2016, then definitely in 2017, but we’re out of luck.

That’s not to say they’ve been away, they started the year on top of the charts with monster hit ‘Rockabye’, a track they’ve followed up with hits ‘Symphony’ and ‘I Miss You’, but no album.

2018 should be the year, mainman Jack Patterson has promised the album is now almost finished, while cellist Grace Chatto has revealed the band have recorded songs with Rhodes, Gallant and a certain Elton John…

Calum Scott

Title: Only Human

Release Date: March 9th

Pre-Order It Here.

The singer, who found fame on Britain’s Got Talent and scored a huge hit with his cover of Robyn’s ‘Dancing On My Own’, drops his debut album in March.

Overseen by Fraser T Smith, who helped Adele come up with ‘Set Fire To The Rain’ and James Morrison write ‘Broken Strings’, the album sees Scott pour his heart into many a ballad, including a new take on Bob Dylan’s ‘Not Dark Yet’.

Ella Henderson

Title: TBA

Release Date: TBA

It’s taken the singer a good chunk of time to craft the follow-up to 2014’s Chapter One. There were reports that the album was finished over a year ago, but nothing emerged.

The album, whenever it comes, is confirmed to feature production from hitmaker supreme Max Martin as well as The Script’s Danny O’Donoghue.

Henderson has spent a chunk of 2017 out on tour with fellow X-Factor survivor James Arthur and debuted a number of new songs, while the pair are also reported to have recorded a duet which is bound for Henderson’s new album.

Hopefully, it’ll be with us sooner rather than later…

Title: Entertainment

Release Date: January 26th

Pre-Order It Here

The Houston pop rockers made a big splash with their debut Double Dare and will follow it up in early 2018 with a second salvo.

Produced by Good Charlotte’s Benji Madden and 5 Seconds Of Summer regular collaborator Courtney Ballard, the album sees the band aiming for the big time with arena-sized choruses and supremely hummable melodies.

Title: TBC

Release Date: TBC

Back now with a new single ‘Glory’ for blockbuster Bright, you should be getting ready to hear a lot more from Bastille.

Speaking in the summer, the band revealed that their third album is written and ready and is “an apocalyptic party record”. Expect it at the end of 2018…

Jess Glynne

Title: TBC

Release Date: TBC

It’s been all quiet from the red-haired siren since she finished her arena tour at the end of 2016, but it’s going to all go in 2018.

For her second album, Glynne has called in the big guns. As well as her long-time collaborator Janee Bennett, she's also had sessions with Ed Sheeran, John Newman confidante Toby Gad, Skrillex and PARTYNEXTDOOR. It's shaping up to be a big record...

Title: TBC

Release Date: TBC

After a little downtime after the completion of a gruelling world tour in support of their 2015 album Every Open Eye, the Scottish synthpop trio are now hard at work on album number three.

For album three, the trio have called it outside help, with Greg Kurstin, who counts Sia, Adele and Ellie Goulding as regular collaborators, at the controls. They’ve also recorded a track with Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart.

Singer Lauren Mayberry has said that the album, which is still untitled, will be their biggest leap into pop yet. We can’t wait to hear it.
