This Month's Vinyl Picks: September 2018
New records from Prince, Paul McCartney and Aphex Twin are among the best vinyl releases coming your way in September...
Piano & a Microphone 1983
Any serious Prince fan will no doubt already be aware of the legends surrounding the late artist’s ‘vault’, with who-knows-how-much unreleased material stockpiled at The Purple One’s studio complex Paisley Park over the years. Given the amount of material that is supposedly stored away, including the legendary unreleased LP known as The Black Album, posthumous releases from Prince’s estate have always been inevitable and the first of these arrives this month.
A Piano & a Microphone 1983 is perhaps an unusual opening gambit from the Prince estate insofar as, much like the title suggests, it’s a very stripped back affair featuring just piano and vocals on all of its nine tracks, including a solo demo of his classic hit 'Purple Rain'. Although mostly works-in-progress, the he new collection nevertheless offers a fascinating insight into his process and the album arrives on September 21st on black vinyl, CD and a deluxe edition containing both.
Suede: The Blue Hour
Britpop survivors Suede return with their eighth studio album this month, their first since A New Morning without longtime producer Ed Buller at the controls, opting instead to recruit legendary producer Alan Moulder his time around.
The album contains 14 new tracks and comes with several vinyl options, including a standard black version, a limited edition blue vinyl and, if you really want to push the boat out, a deluxe LP box set, all of which are set to arrive in stores on September 21st.
Christine and The Queens: Chris
French chanteuse Héloïse Letissier, better known by her stage name Christine & The Queens, has ditched the longer portion of her onstage persona and adopted a new androgynous look for her sophomore LP Chris, which is set to land on the shelves in stores on September 21st.
Including her new hit single ‘Girlfriend’, the album is available in CD/LP packages in either English or French, as well as a limited edition deluxe vinyl box set.
Various Artists: The Rick & Morty Soundtrack
Dan Harmon’s hit animated show isn’t short of admirers and as Rick & Morty fans eagerly await the arrival of the show’s fourth season in 2019, in the meantime the folks behind the show have set about releasing some of the best music from the animated series with a new soundtrack LP arriving this month.
The soundtrack album contains 26 of the show’s best musical moments, including ‘Get Schwifty’, ‘Alien Jazz Rap’ and ‘Rick’s Dance’. A CD version and a hmv-exclusive pink and black splatter vinyl edition are set to arrive on September 28th, with a cassette and vinyl box version coming later on November 23rd.
Travis Scott: Astroworld
Travis Scott’s long-awaited Astroworld album finally arrived in August and didn’t disappoint, heading straight to the top of the Billboard charts in its first week and keeping a less-than-impressed Nicki Minaj off the top spot in its second.
The album was initially available only as a download or on streaming services, but the physical formats arrive on September 14th, including a standard black vinyl edition.
Paul McCartney: Egypt Station
Virgin EMI Records
Former Beatle and all-round living legend Paul McCartney returns yet again this month with his 17th solo album Egypt Station. Produced mostly by Adele hitmaker Greg Kurstin, with some additional production from Ryan Tedder on single ‘Fuh You’, the album includes 16 new tracks, with an extra two if you want to grab yourself the hmv exclusive edition on CD too.
As for the vinyl options there’s a standard black 12” or a deluxe 2LP version to choose from, all of which are set to land in-store on September 7th.
Aphex Twin: Collapse EP
If you’re one of the people who spotted some strange symbols appearing in public places such as London’s Elephant & Castle tube station, as well as various other locations dotted around the globe, then you may already be aware the impending release of new music from Richard James, known to most under the name Aphex Twin. His unusual marketing campaign has seen his logo appearing everywhere from New York to Tokyo in wall tiles, on blimps and even carved into topiary, all of which has been pointing the arrival of latest release Collapse.
His new EP is set to arrive in stores on September 14th and is packed with his usual brand of brilliantly mangled electronica, available as a standard black 12’ vinyl or a deluxe version wrapped in a ‘Procédé Heliophore’ silver foil sleeve.
The Story So Far: Proper Dose
California pop-punks The Story So Far return this month with their latest full-length effort Proper Dose, their fourth album in total. The album sails into stores on all formats on September 21st including CD, a standard black vinyl LP and a limited edition version pressed onto blue / clear coloured vinyl which is exclusive to hmv.
Hardcore punk / metalcore outfit Beartooth unveil their third album this month and its packed all the grinding riffs you’d expect from the Ohio four-piece led by Caleb Shomo. The new album Disease includes 12 new tracks and is set to land on the shelves in stores on September 28th, including a standard black vinyl edition and a limited edition hmv exclusive version pressed onto clear / cloudy vinyl.
Joe Strummer: Joe Strummer 001
A new box set featuring the solo work of The Clash frontman Joe Strummer is our final pick this month and is a real bumper edition with seven discs in total, four of which are reissued solo LPs, with previously unreleased demos and rare tracks making up the rest. There’s also a stunning array of extras including a 64-page hardback book, a demo cassette, a reproduction of a 199 Earthquake Weather promo badge and even a replica of Joe’s driving licence.
The box set is due to arrive in stores in all its splendour on September 28th, but don't worry if it's a little out of your price range - there's a standard 4LP version too, as well as a couple of CD options.
